The readings defining straightness as normality, was interesting because before this my understanding of the word straight was that it meant heterosexual. However, after giving the word and meaning more thought, the definition of normality seems to fit the word well. When the word straight is used, more than signifying that someone is heterosexual, it seems to signify that the person is normal. With the meaning of normal signifying what is usually common or right, by allowing normality, it’s inevitably allowing people and things to be label as not normal, wrong, bad, or not the way a person should be. Furthermore, it is also indicating that there is a right way to be or live, which is denying other existences. This then allows for them to be treated differently and most times unfairly. Such as, “[w]e come out of the closet, face the rejection of society, face firing squads, just to love each other!” (2) In this context, this phrase seems to be able to directly point out the ridiculousness of the situation and the essential meaning of what they want.
