Strategies are crafted, not designed’
Strategic management course work
Mintzberg argued that ‘Strategies are crafted, not designed’. That critical may contain some truth, but thing can change depend on how people use and think about it in their own way. In business strategies are need in order to successful, some believe strategies are crafted some do not. In this essay there are some arguing about the matter has been discussed. In my opinion strategies are crafted, I am going to critical evaluate it in this paper.
According to Mintzberg. H, at the first place, ask almost anyone what strategy is, most of them will say it probably a plan of some sort, an obviously guide to future action. If go further ask them what strategy a competitor, a government or even they have actually followed. They will chances their consistency and describe behavior in the past, an action over time. It simply turns out, strategy, is one of those words that they define in one way and use another, without noticed the difference between it. The research showed that a craftsman can change what he does much more easily than such large companies as Volkswagenwerk and National film broads (NFB) happened to interesting investment in feature-film without planning to enter in. Furthermore, based on theory of Persson.G the general development within organization strategy design from late 1960s and early 1970s. In this process, organization researches changes to problems such as the interaction between the organization and it environment and factors influencing the organization structure.
Example that a company has a plan for 5 year to launch their new products to customers and expand, but what they cannot predict is during their plan time many things could change and competitor appear like what Patrick said “Markets that do not exist cannot be analyzed…not only are the market application for disruptive technologies unknown at the time of their development, they are unknowable”. What we are arguing here is not about planning is not

There is no single, universally accepted definition for strategy. Some understand it as a deliberate plan, drawn up to achieve set goals, others see it more as a process, whereby a company’s decision and actions are made in alignment with opportunities or threats in the industry. Even others define it as a pattern of consistent actions in decision-making and lastly there are those with a military view of strategy, who consider it a manoeuvre to beat and outsmart the competition (Parthasarthy, 2006). By drawing from each of the definitions, one could say that strategy and by extension, strategic management, is constituted of short-term strategies involving managing and planning for the present and long-term decisions and actions, made, taken and implemented by managers to achieve superior competitive advantage, compared to their competitors.…

On the other hand this does not necessarily mean that planning is useless at all. Planning is not necessarily about formalized analysis, but about “thinking before doing.” Thus, we can state as follows:…

Mintzberg (n.a), described company’s strategy’s as a consciously intended course of action, a guideline or set of guidelines to deal with a situation but he also informs the reader just like a plan, a strategy can be also a ploy too, really just a specific "maneuver" intended to outwit an opponent or competitor. To have competitive advantage it means to overcome the competitive forces in its industry (Dess, Lumpkin & Eisner,2010). Many writers have identified that strategy is the outcome of a formal planning process and that top management plays the most important role in this process. The formal strategic planning process has been known to have five main steps; the first step in a company’s strategy making process should be to select a corporate vision, mission and values that they desire for the organisation. Strategy is about planning to reach a vision which differentiates a company from its competitors in a positive way. It encompasses overall direction as well as the many detailed activities that occur in a company. Strategic success generally depends on possessing an enlightened and unique vision as well as doing the many things needed to achieve the vision well. If one focuses too much on the activities often the vision is lost, likewise if the focus on the vision is too intense then the operational matters are neglected resulting in across the board problems in personnel, quality, poor productivity, and so on. Indeed, ask any manager to define his or her idea of strategy and one will invariably be given a raft of answers as the person struggles to differentiate between corporate strategy and operational planning.…

Strategy, originated from the ancient art of war, refers to the planning made on the basis of the analysis of the whole war situation. Moreover, under the influence of Ansoff’s Strategy for Diversification, strategy has begun to be widely used in economic management and many other areas including society, education, science and technology, and etc. (Johnson, et al, 2012). The widespread use of strategy illustrate that both theoretical circle and business circle have fully realized the importance and value of strategy. It cannot be denied that scholars have reached an agreement on the importance of strategy, but they do not reach a consensus about the definition of strategy. Until now, there are numerous kinds of definitions on strategy. Strategy always differs from situation to situation or from industry to industry. Even Michael Porter as a management guru does not clearly define what strategy means in his work “What is Strategy?”, though he repeatedly mentioned the concept of strategy. Based on the debate on the definition of strategy, the purpose of this essay is to critically discuss what strategy means by drawing from different theories and perspectives. To be specific, the main body of the essay will discuss the meaning of strategy through comparing the strategic perspectives of different scholars. Following this, it will come to a short conclusion in terms of above discussion.…
