I was commissioned to create a piece of street furniture for the Kelvin Grove Urban Village. My fountain design, called ‘My Cup Spilleth Over’, represents East meeting West, which reflects the Brisbane’s social demographic and cultural fusion. The fountain features a ‘U’ shaped arc which cascades water down a series of large assembled Chinese teacups. These cups are hand painted in red and green, as these colours traditionally symbolise good luck in Asian culture.

1.1 Aspect 1 - Defining the problem

1.1.2 Defining the problem
The fountain I designed as street furniture for the Kelvin Grove Urban Village has some potential problems that will need to be solved.
One problem is selecting an ideal location for the fountain. This particular design requires a level ground and sufficient space for the height of the fountain. An ideal location would be a park, such as Maccaskie Park, in Kelvin Grove.
Another potential problem is maintaining the look and finish of the stone so that it always looks polished. A clear weatherproof lacquer could be applied every year to ensure the fountain always looks visually appealing.
The fountain design is aesthetically appealing but may be vandalised. The Chinese cups may be chipped or broken if hit with a hammer or metal bat. To avoid this from occurring, the cups will be constructed out of thick concrete and secured to the steel rod by steel collars, which attach to the lip of the cups/bowls.
The water pump and filtration may present an issue down the track because the u-shaped sandstone structure has a copper water pipe inserted inside it to allow the water to circulate. The water runs up the u-shape structure and cascades down over the Chinese cups/bowls and back into the base. If maintenance is required on the water pipes, the sandstone blocks will need to be detached and the copper pipe/s extracted.
Another potential problem may be that people choose to tamper
