Landa Springs Research Paper
In this essay you will learn about a park that is located in New Braunfels, TX. This park is the home of the largest springs in Texas. The Comal Springs has seven major springs and dozens of smaller ones that occur over a distance of 4,300 feet. The Springs and the Comal River are home to a federally endangered species named Fountain Darter. Though there are other rivers and springs in New Braunfels, the Comal Springs flows through the popular Landa Park which is home to wildlife and a great place to enjoy a nice day. As mentioned earlier, there are several openings in the springs, but over 80% come from many small springs and seeps that are underneath Landa Lake. The water that comes from these springs is drinkable from coming out of the spring. replaced once the species was found again. This species is always at risk because of the fact that New Braunfels, TX is always at risk for a drought. When there is not much rain fall there is no way to replenish the springs. This ecosystem is Located inside the park and there are springs that come out at different areas and they all flow into one big lake.
Landa Park is a place where tourist and the local community go to have a nice family day. The park consists of playgrounds, picnic areas, a spring fed swimming pool, and a chlorine swimming pool. However there is a shallow wading area that the Springs flow into and people used to wade in there to cool down. Once this started happening, the park rangers started noticing a lot more dead fish and crawfish were surfacing. Though this place is a nice park to swim, it is now only restricted to swimming in designated areas. Back when the Indians discovered the place in the 1600’s they would camp out and build fires and as the years went on this became a place for families to come every year. The park rangers had to put an end to camping out in the park and the use of open fires was banned due to the fact that the carbon cycle and nitrogen production was being harmed by the human interaction within the park. On top of having all the springs that flow through the park, there are over 50 species of trees that reside in the park as well.
Being that the ground is so sacred and the trees are sacred, if you get caught climbing the trees the park rangers may right you a citation.
The rules in this park are very strict to protect the wildlife and trees that live in the park. If the trees are damaged then that messes up the carbon cycle and when one thing is messed up in the cycle, then all living things are put in danger. The springs are all protected, and you cannot fish from the Landa Lake that is in the park and that is to preserve the life of the species. One way to ensure the ecosystems structure is not damaged is by ensuring that all the rules are followed in the park. The main reason why there is no wading in the water or fishing is preserve the life of the species in the water. The water levels are monitored daily to ensure the water flow is staying constant, and when a drought starts to show they monitor the water levels of the springs every few hours. Being that there is over 50 species of trees it is important to monitor them during the drought season as
well.
Landa Park is a place where ecosystems thrive off each other and it is important that everything stays in cycle, because once you kill one cycle the others will fall behind it. It is up to the community, park rangers, and everyone else who visits the park to make sure the ecosystem and the species that call the park home are not in danger at any time. If all things in the biogeochemical cycles change then everything around it will change and adapt with it.
