Strong Relationship With Family Essay
Death:
Why It's Important to Have A Strong Relationship With Family

July 12, 2006 and April 7, 2009, were the two days that had sent me into a emotional state of mind that I will never forget. “We only realize how much someone means to us, when they are no longer with us.” -Ryan Garst. Growing up as a child, I was taught to be a leader and an example for my peers and the people that I’d soon be acquainted with. My parents had already taught me all of the necessary skills about being a leader. An example was to never be a follower, following a crowd of people could lead you down the wrong path in life. The same words were also said by two more people that really set it in stone for me: Mrs. Sanford (babysitter), and Cheryl Denise Burgess (grandmother).

On July 12, 2006, word hit home that my babysitter, one of the closest people to me, had died of an heartattack. Since I was a young boy, both her and my grandmother had taught me to become a young respectful man while leading my peers. They would always say how if I could learn the skill of leading people into positive roles while being smart about it, respectful, and kind, that I would go exceptionally far in life.

When the day had come that I realized my babysitter had died, a part of me just sat in sorrow. I knew that for the rest of my life that I couldn’t go to her house and

I realized that a lot of families and individuals have experienced even more and unfortunate deaths toward family members, friends, and just loved ones in general. For me writing this essay put me in that same emotional state of mind that I had experienced when both my grandmother and babysitter had passed. That is why today I hold a strong and loving relationship with my family and friends, because when the time comes God is calling one of them home, and that you know, they know, and God knows that you both had a fun ride without any

In 2010 a very close friend and grandmother-like figure of mine had passed away. Sandy and I were extremely close to this woman and the loss of this magnificent woman really set us both back. Through the pain and tears, Sandy taught me that despite the loss of our friend, she wouldn’t have wanted us to be mourning her loss but rejoicing in the fact that she could be with our Heavenly Father. Sandy and I began to take our misfortunes and find something to be positive about. With the positive outlook perspective at our fingertips, Sandy began teaching me that who I was was beautiful. My “old soul” was something unique and nothing to be ashamed about. Even though I struggled relating to kids my age, Sandy makes me feel valued beyond belief. She constantly informs me of how impressed she is with decisions I’ve made, opinions I hold, and values I have. This type of awe for me is something that helps me get through challenging times that involve me questioning who I am, why I do the things I do, and why I care for people so deeply when they don’t necessarily deserve…

I remember the moment my mother took her last breath. Right before that happened my sisters and I were all laughing and joking with our aunt and cousin who were on Skype. We all knew my mom was in her transition stage. She was leaving us but nobody knew when. My cousin, who was watching her from her screen, noticed my mom open her eyes. I then heard my aunt who heard my cousin ask “are her eyes open”? When I turned to look at her I noticed her eyes turned to my sister who was sitting on her right, then turn in front of her to my other sister who was laying in front of her then turn to me as I was sitting on her left side. She then looked up, closed her eyes for the last time and left. I looked up at my sister who is a nurse and saw the look on her face as she nodded her head to confirm that our mom had just died. At that very moment I felt fear, confusion and pain go through me. I began to cry at the same time wondering if my mom…

For this term, I choice the image above about a sculpture called “The Young Family” by Patricia Piccinini in the Bendigo Art Gallery. This series as her the most famous work have been exhibited in many galleries and museums. The Young Family, which Piccinini created for the 50th Venice Biennale, shows a creature between animal and human that we respect her as something more than just an animal. “Monster” might be the only word that can describe her work. My time as a Younglife leader stands out to me as most rewarding. Knowing that the best things in life take time, I greatly cherish the relationships and transformations molded during that experience. Over the course of three years, with countless camps, soccer games, and conversations, I gained the privilege of speaking into the lives of my middle school students. Nothing was more fulfilling than the chance to offer words of reinforcement and guidance whenever they approached me seeking advice about their worries and struggles. My faith gives me an inherent joy, but the greater reward has been sharing that joy and source of strength with others. I now understand how being a friend who thoughtfully listens and encourages can sometimes be enough…

The summer before sixth grade I attended sleep away camp in upstate New York. I had a great time up there, however I returned home to some grim news. While I was away my great aunt had gotten pneumonia, and was very ill. She was one hundred and one years old at the time, and she had been nearing the end for quite a while by that point. This, however, seemed to be the final stretch and I was told that there was a chance that the upcoming weekend could be the last time that I would ever see her. My family had planned to travel out to visit her the following weekend and asked if I had wanted to come as well. Throughout the years I had grown very close to her, as we spent many family events together. I cherish my memories of spending time with her at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I wanted to see her one last time to value all the time that I had left so I decided to go with my family.…

Four years ago when I was 13, my grandpa passed away. I couldn’t bear the thought of him actually being gone. Just the other day I said something about my grandpa to my mom, that it had only been four years, she looked at me confused and said it again “it has been almost four years.” I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I just felt so empty inside, how could I not realize how long he had been gone already. Right after my grandpa passed away I terrible feeling that I didn’t get to say goodbye like I wanted to it happened so fast. I thought to myself why didn’t I do more with my grandpa? Why didn’t I spend the night with him more? Why did I sometimes put off not going with him to do the little things like fishing and shooting where we would have made the best memories when he asked me to, because I thought I had better things to do or other plans? All these things played over and over through my head, when I finally realized he had passed away. His death haunted me and family like a bad dream. Still to this day I find myself constantly thinking about him. My grandpa was an amazing, kind, strong man. I looked up to him, he was my role model. Even though he is gone now I still look up to him and I want to be like him and I always know there is room to improve to become a better person.…

I walked in and it just didn’t feel the same. Grandpa wasn’t sitting in his chair by the window. It was empty. There was a lot of crying that day. Then in the afternoon lots of people came to make funeral arrangements. After everyone left we packed up and drove the long two hours home again. The next couple of days nothing seemed right, we were all sad, especially my mom. Then the day came to go and get ready for the funeral. We drove two hours again. That afternoon I helped clean out the shop, and got ready to have the funeral meal there. Then the next day was the day of the viewing. When the undertaker wheeled my grandpa in on a coffin I couldn’t hold it in no more. I was trying to be brave, but seeing his white body just laying there it was too much to bear. Since we lived two hours away I only got to see my grandpa a couple times a year, but that didn’t mean I still didn’t love him. I did, and knowing he was gone put a hole in my heart. There wasn’t much time to get composed till people started coming, there was lots of them. My grandpa was an auctioneer, and traveled a lot so he knew lots of people. I know they were all trying to help and be nice, but I just wished they would have left and I could be left alone. It was 10:00 till it was over. That night I sank into…

There was a long period of time in my life when I did not care about anything but myself. It took me until the last brief moments of my grandfather’s life to start caring about others. It took until January of 2013 to stop taking people I care about for granted. During my elementary, and junior high, and high school years, especially high school, is where I took just about everything to heart and started to appreciate the help he was doing for me with little in return.…
