Structural Functionalism focuses on harmony within society. If there is a lack of harmony then society itself is distressed and out of order. Conflict Theory, however, is concerned with that society is in constant conflict. Whereas, for the structural functionalist, when society is not in a state of harmony within its established norms, or is in a state of anomie, society will adjust or evolve to reestablish a harmonious state. The conflict theorist will believe that society will only evolve out of the resolution of conflict. If there is no conflict then society will become stagnant and die.

Within my marriage it would appear that there was an internal struggle over domination and power between the role of the husband and wife. This struggle was needed in order for families to survive within society. I come from a military-civilian marriage and have been deployed frequently, at least half of the last six years of my marriage. This led to the power structure of my family to constantly be in a state of flux between my spouse and myself. This is common among military families, where the standard roles of husbands and wives do not meet the societal norms. Therefore, as for the conflict theorist, the conflict and eventual divorce was a necessity for society.
