A functionalist would view the Affordable Care Act as another piece of legislation that contributes to the functioning of society (Tischler, 2014). The act was passed so that society can continue to operate effectively (Tischler, 2014). It provides health care to more people which allows them to get the medical attention that they need if they are sick. As a result, less people are sick which allows them to continue being efficient and producing members of society. Along with expanded coverage, the act also lowers health care costs which allows people to spend more money on goods and services. These new purchases help the economy grow and expand. This shows as an example of how the Affordable Care Act and our economic system are two parts of society that function together (Tischler, 2014). Functionalists would also say that the act works for all people as a way to provide everyone with health care coverage at a price that they can afford.
