During the first 13 years of my education I became increasingly skilled and learning how to succeed in school, what I lacked is the skills to learn. I came to Morris learning how to decipher a professor’s lingo when explaining an assignment, or the key words and ideas that would earn me all the points. I knew what I had to repeat back to my professor to earn full points instead of analyzing information for myself and earning partial credit for giving my own opinions. At UMM I have learned to learn meaning that I have acquired the skills to analyze, assess, argue and link multiple ideas together whether or not they were taught together. Communication skills are brought up by many (including Hill, Harris and Marion) as a skill employers look for that liberal arts students acquire. There are many aspects of communication, both public speaking and interpersonal and group communication. Although these skills are specific they aren’t learned as the specific focus in a class they are learned through practice in a large variety of classes through aspects such as presentations and group projects. Even in the communications classes I took, I was learning about communications skills by analyzing research, practicing skills with unrelated information and connecting those classes to the other ones I was taking.
