Why You Are Stuck where You Are in Life: Escapism
Before passing away, my grandmother spent 50 years in an abusive relationship with my grandfather. She never got the courage to leave no matter how bad it got. Instead, she would escaped using fiction novels and a TON of movies.

No matter how bad it got, she would forget as she would escape into her own little world.

I love my grandmother, but that's not a life worth living. But you might be doing the same thing my friend.

You never faced your problems in life because you decided to escape to worlds where your problems can't hurt you.

Even when something bad happens, you just self-medicate by using escapism.

TV, YouTube, video games, food, anime, manga, browsing the internet, daydreaming,

You can't just cut if all off (that's like not eating all day just to lose weight). But you do need to be aware how much time you spend escaping (just how you need to be aware how much food you are stuffing in your mouth each day).

You know what I find is the best way to avoid escapism (and avoid over eating)? Spending time with people you enjoy. We are social creatures, we are wired to connect. And if we don't get that connection, our brains will try everything to fill the void.

And do you know what the opposite of escapism is? Interacting with people.

(Actually, the true opposite of escapism is engaging the world, moving towards your dreams. But 90% of the time that means interacting with people.)

Don't confuse comfort with happiness. Happiness is external. Happiness comes from our relationships. Escapism makes you very comfortable in life, it doesn't bring you happiness.

P.S. Yes, we all need to escape from time to time. But do your work/project for the day before you escape. Put in the time on building a good relationship with someone that day before you medicate yourself. After you see your progress in a month from now, you'll thank

There are no shortcuts to deal with challenges, for one may only become more trapped in their despair. Like Ethan, Zeena and Maddy, many people in the world think that they can liberate themselves of their burdens without actually dealing with them, but that is not how life works. One cannot simply run away from the challenges that block them from their goals; one must defeat and overcome those challenges. Life is not a fairy tale, nor will it ever be. There will never be a knight in shining armor or a witch to hold one back. The only witch that exists in one’s life is oneself, and the only knight is oneself. It is futile to believe that one can evade life and its…

    Escapism In Siddhartha

Escapism has existed ever since the hypothalamus developed inside the human brain. Its four functions have kept us alive as a species, managing fight, flight, food, and sex. But when that flight manifests itself in interpersonal relationships, in spirituality, in attempts to avoid the unavoidable, things start to fall apart. In Siddhartha, by Hermann Hess, escapism is just one more untruth for Siddhartha to overcome.…

Women who are victims of domestic violence often have multiple barriers to overcome before they choose to end the violent relationship. While in an abusive relationship, victims often don't go because they are threatened by the abuser (Ramsey, 2013). The women are often afraid of the perpetrator's retaliation if they report the abuse (Al-Natour, Qandil, & Gillespie, 2015). Women fear being killed by their abuser and harm coming to their children. Fear is the way through which abusers control their victims. Emotional control forces the victims to fear the harm that could happen to her and the people close to her. The victim will bear all the abuse to protect her children. The constant state of fear gives the victims a feeling of panic. Living in panic in the relationship often causes the victims to lose their confidence in themselves. When the victims lose their confidence, they begin to live their lives to make their abusers happy. The victims will start to neglect their needs and desires to ensure that the abuser is…

My son gave me the strength I needed to escape that abusive relationship. As a matter of fact my ex was just released this month from prison after serving time for assaulting the woman he dated after me. She had the strength and courage I lacked, at the time, to do what I failed to. I regret that I did not report him because I may have been able to save her from that heinous experience. Currently I am engaged to a remarkable man who supports me and my ambitions. He is raising my son as his own and the two are inseparable.…

Is it sad that when it comes to writing a story all about me. Just one story, nothing comes to mind. This is what happens when you dedicate all your life to go to school and try to be the best you can be. Since I was a little girl all I ever did was think about going to school, getting good grades, and just making sure to be able to make your teachers happy. Especially your parents because if you did otherwise you would end up with a beating. When I got good grades it was mostly just so I would not get grounded. I always lived in a nutshell, I do not even remember if I had any friends. It is such a sad thing to me just to sit here and write. Every one else writes about how they went on a fishing trip or some intresting story. What is my story?…

For as long as I could remember my Grandma was my best friend. She learned how to use a phone just so she could talk to me every day. Every time I would go to her house we would play board games and make cookies. In elementary school she would pull me out of class we would go to the park or Olive Garden. Over a span of three years she developed alzheimer's, and it was miserable. Watching someone you love fade away takes a toll on you.…

We all know how the bad days go, sometimes you may be able to grab some finger food that you can stuff in your mouth on the only 2 free minutes you have for the day. Water? Forget it. Taking time to go to the bathroom? Some days you’re lucky if you go once or twice in a full 12 hour shift. Do we all know how bad this is for you? Yes. Do we still do it? Of course. Time is often not on our side, and our body suffers because of it. When surveyed, “half of respondents said they felt they had enough time to eat a healthy, balanced diet, while the other half said time pressures prevented them eating well. However, perhaps more significantly, 55% admitted to currently being ‘overweight’ or ‘very overweight’” ("How happy and," 2008).…

The thematic thread that I sought to explore this year was escape. This subject caught my attention because of how escape comes in many forms and varies from person to person. Personally, I tend to escape by daydreaming, sleeping, or turning to my hobbies in order to take a mental break from my responsibilities, as a refresher, or as a way to relieve stress. However, my escape leaves my responsibilities behind and results in procrastination. Because I have experienced escape personally, I thought that it would be rather interesting to look into it more in depth. Often when people look at escape, they look at how the escape happens and what happens after that escape, or the effects. The varying effects of these escapes is what I wanted to look…

Today’s society contains an overwhelming amount of people “stuck” in abusive relationships. Why don’t they just pack up and leave one might wonder? Is this because they want to believe that people can change? It is a very disturbing issue, when the person that you are in “Love” with is the person inflicting so much pain on you. An outsider looking in a on a relationship of this sort will question why women that are victims of Intimate Partner Violence simply do not leave their relationships?…
