From my end, I knew the importance of television – even from the beginning, even when I was still a child. Here are some of the reasons why television had always been important in my life:
The TV set was my baby-sitter – All my relatives remember that it was my maternal grandmother who took care of me and reared me as a child. Of course, my beloved grandmother did and I will always be grateful to her for that. But my grandmother also had her own life. She also had a house of her own and a husband to look after and there were periods when we were apart. During those times, the househelp looked after me and to get me off their back (they had other chores to finish), they made me watch all the TV I wanted. (I also needed my own space – away from them.)
In today’s world where both father and mother have to work, television plays an even more crucial part because it has to baby-sit children for longer hours, while the parents are away – and while the househelp does other chores. Of course, it is also important that a child’s TV viewing is monitored. If both parents have to work, either father or mother (or preferably both) should make a list of TV shows the kids can watch – with the guardian seeing to it that it is followed and implemented. *……………………………….*

I believe that television can influence children in good and bad ways. Depending of what types of shows and channels the kids are watching it could actually be a good thing. If a child is only allowed to watch kids shows, and kids’ channels they won’t learn anything bad. If children are just watching shows like Dora the Explorer and Jake’s Neverland Island, they aren’t going to learn anything bad; they may actually learn things that are beneficial. With Dora the Explorer they learn problem solving and also get introduced to some Mexican culture and Spanish. If you were to let a child watch adult shows though, it may not turn out very well. For instance, if you let a little girl grow up watching shows like Teen Mom and 16 and Pregnant, they grow up thinking that the way these girls act is ok, because hey, if they’re on TV, they must be doing something right.…

They see adults acting chaotic; cursing, fighting, screaming, etc. in public areas. This gives people a negative outlook on the world. On the other hand, watching television can be educational in a positive way because there is more to television than reality shows. I agree that television shows influences our behaviors even without our knowledge of it. Although television seems like a great thing to have, it has many drawbacks. Television can have negative impacts on people, especially kids. People learn new skills by observing, then utilizing it, such as when we were kids and learn to walk by seeing our family walking around or learning a new subject in school. Therefore, when watching television it may influence our fundamental social dispositions; no matter if it is good or bad. Almost ninety nice percent of households possess one television. Television is today’s source of news, stories, legends, and characters from previous centuries; the reason why it is so influential. However, only “0.7 percent is used for public service announcements and news”(Sex, violence, profanity...). The other 97.3 % consists of television shows with violence, crime, advertisements and mainstream blandness. Many studies and research has been done to demonstrate that heavy television viewing may lead to serious health consequences. Television is great for entertainment but has grown into a major problem.…
