While I agree that student loan debt is always in the back of a medical student’s mind, I disagree with the idea that it is a significant driving force for specialty choice or that it prevents people from entering primary care. Just as the data in this article suggests, I believe most medical students choose their specialty based upon personality fit and how well a specialty complements their interests, goals, and values. In my personal experience, enjoying a clerkship and feeling a connection with individuals within a given specialty increases the likelihood of considering said specialty, regardless of potential for monetary gain. Monetary gain may be a secondary factor for some students, depending upon their goals, however I do not believe…

Those of who have debt raising over $25,000 are significantly less likely to thrive financially and physically than of those without loans. In financial well-being, those of who graduated in 2000- 2014 debt free were 16 percent more financially stable than those who had debt of $50,000 or more. This large thriving gap exists for all other categories of well-being including community, social and purpose. When comparing these results to those of 1990- 1999 graduates, the older group has little differences in community and social well-being elements. One of the possible reasons for the older group still having lower well-being statistics could be because once you become debt free, you’re still carrying a financial burden due to the fact that you were paying off student loans instead of investing for the future…

College students face many adversities as they transcend their collegiate careers. Depression is a major factor that haunts students since the first day they walk into their first lecture. It is extremely alarming that in 2009, the American College Health Association found that 9.2 percent of college students at all types of institutions reported being diagnosed with depression, and 9.4 percent with anxiety (Fogg. B14-B15). However, most researchers believe that this statistical percentage is much higher. What exactly is depression? Depression in terms of psychology is, “a sign of psychiatric disorder or a component of various psychoses, with symptoms of misery, anguish, or guilt accompanied by headache, insomnia, etc.” (Oxford University Press).
