Introduction
Pacific Adventist University is an institution where people from all over the Pacific, Papua New Guinea and other parts of the world come to learn and get educated. Indeed it is the most beautiful place in Papua New Guinea as most critics say. This is because of the landscape and the well preserved lawn with the variety of birds and the lakes. However, it is not as beautiful as many people think when speaking of littering. There are times when you will see a lot of rubbish under the table, on the flower beds and on the foot path. This report will give us information on the behaviors of the student consciousness towards littering in Pacific Adventist University.

Literature review

Research has found that people litter when someone (who cares) is not witnessing (Cialdini, et al,. 1981:254). This is obvious that the person is very cautious about being caught. This person knows actually what he or she is doing. Such action leads to a conclusion where littering is stated as a measure of attitude (Cialdini, et al,. 1981:254). Littering can also spoil a good picture (Argyrou, 1997:160) and turn it into something that is totally opposite to what is expected. It also indicates that a society is not functioning well(Namosuaia, 30 March 2012). There are some bad effects or disadvantage of littering,Buchamann (03 April 2012) agreed by saying that “Littering on the main street… causes a lot of public health concern, and social problem.” Such problems can be solved by implementing some ideas. Here is a suggestion made by Dobbs (1991:221) that littering can be minimize by charging (tell the person who litter to pay a certain amount of money for what he has done) those

    Throwing Away Trash

Out of 40 people observed only 7 people left trash and 4 of them sat together. I feel like our sample size was too small and we did not observe enough littering to have a statistically significant finding. To improve our experiment, it should be tried again but instead of one hour of observation, maybe it should be increased to an hour or two a day over a week’s span, or multiple locations to make it more generalizable. Because of social loafing, where members of a group have a tendency to exert less effort than if working alone under the assumption that others will pick up their slack or cover them, we thought that people would leave trash behind when in a group. Although this was the case at one table, for the most part everyone picked up their trash when they…

    Why Respect Is Important

This shows that people are willing to respect the beautiful place they live in by cleaning up the trash around town; they choose to show even more by not littering. We are able to see this courtesy in school as well. We see this from respect between students and teachers, students and students, and just all staff members; like cleaning up common areas, helping to pick up something a teacher or student dropped, holding the door for other students and teachers, and not littering in school areas. I would sometimes see kids wearing things like expensive clothes or jewelry and just from judging others and classify themselves as a “higher ranking”, shows disrespect. As a result with this we could learn from it and respect everyone…

I agree with the idea that even though loads of money are spent clearing rubbish, this alone cannot solve the littering problem. Environment has become so littered and polluted because of human irresponsible behavior and as long as the cause of the problem remains it can’t be solved only with very small part of the society trying to take some actions.…

Secondly, junk food is to be said as the major contributor to litter problems. The fast food packaging causes litter problems which is a safety and health hazard, increases cleaning costs and reflects bad image to our communities (Smith 2005). Cans, crisp packets, cartons and plastic container are among of them and are everywhere (Green 2005). By reducing the sale of junk foods, litter problem in schools can be redressed (Smith 2005) as many junk foods are sold in school canteen. As a result of the reduction, the school grounds man doesn’t have to spend so long cleaning and has more time to spend on maintenance projects that benefit the school (Green 2005).…
