In the newspaper article, “Students Get the Message.” Patric Reynolds was explaining the evils of Tobacco use. Reynolds was the grandson of R.J. Reynolds, the founder of a tobacco company. His brother and father both dies from tobacco related diseases, so he wanted to spread awareness to keep others safe. He gave a speech and showed some images at Central Middle School. One of the characteristics of this newspaper article that I saw was that it has an author right at the top underneath the title and subtitle. The title was “Students Get the Message”, the subtitle was “R.J. Reynolds' grandson speaks at Central about evils of smoking”, and the author was “Maria Lockwood”. Another thing that made this a newspaper article was it had a picture with a caption. This article had a picture of Patrick Reynold talking to the school. It also had a caption that said “Patrick Reynolds, right, fields questions from Central Middle School students after an anti-smoking speech Tuesday. Reynolds, grandson of the founder of RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co., delivered an emotional message meant to open students' eyes to the evils of tobacco. From reading this newspaper article, we get to know some things about Patrick Reynolds. Name three important characteristics of Patrick. Describe something Patrick says, thinks, or does to show that he has each characteristic.
The three characteristics I think describes Patrick are truthful, smart, and betraying. Patrick is truthful because he told all the students the truth even though that meant more people are not going to want tobacco and that will put his family business profits lower. He is betraying because he betrayed his family business and technically telling people to go against his family business. Patrick was also smart because even if he was betraying his family he was still saving a lot of lives. He saved lives because tobacco can kill, and spreading awareness about that helped save lives.
7. Use information from the article and your own ideas to explain what Patrick Reynolds meant when he said, "I want my family to be on the right side for a change."
I think Patrick meant he wanted his family to be the good guys. Selling tobacco makes good money, but it isn’t the right thing. Elling tobacco is ruining millions of lives. I think Patrick wants that to change so he is doing public speaking to spread awareness. He wants his family to be the good guys and do what he is
