Q1. What was the industrial revolution? When did it occur? How did industrialisation lead to the creation of the design profession? How was industrial manufacturing different from the traditional way of making a product and what role did the designer play in creating new products?
The Industrial Revolution was a point in time during the 18th and 19th centuries when basic hand tools were put to a stop, and machines, factories and mass production was introduced.
It begun in Britain during the late 1700’s, broadening into Europe soon after.
The industrial revolution lead to the creation of the design profession as distribution methods were now required for the mass productions that were created. These distribution methods included catalogues, brochures, sales representatives etc.

The role the Designer plays in making a product is to find solutions and create products suitable for mass production.

Mass production refers to the manufacturing of any type of goods in a large quantity by machinery and the assembly line.
Factors, which have contributed to high turnover as well as international sales, would include the aesthetic look of the product, as well as the distribution methods mentioned earlier, such as catalogues, sales representatives, etc.
