Law consists of a group of rules of action or conducts prearranged by governing authority and possess legitimate legal obligatory force for the common good and welfare of the country (Melvin, 2011). Law plays an important role in one’s everyday life and functions in many aspects. Law is created to protect one’s rights in society and in business by setting obligations and duties for individuals or groups to follow. One of the most apparent functions of law is to provide a system of order to define crime and levies punishment for violation of that crime (Melvin, 2011). Apart from law, there are numerous subdivisions use to target specific areas. Whereas there are subdivisions, one factor that it shares in common is the role of counsel is important, referring to attorneys. The two categories in which subdivision pertains to are primary and secondary sources of the laws, under the heading primary law follows: constitution, statutory, common, and administrative. In short both the primary and secondary sources of the law are stated to ensure that the most visible purpose of the law is upheld and both primary and secondary play an important role.
In the United States, the legislature, made up of the Senate and the House of Representatives, makes laws. The president has the power to veto a bill before it is passed into law. The Supreme Court reviews laws and can invalidate laws inconsistent with the Constitution (Melvin, 2011). American law uses the concept of the doctrine of stare decisis (Latin “to stand by that which is decided”). According to Wikipedia, “Stare decisis is a legal principle by which judges are obliged to respect the precedent established by prior decisions.” Cases that have the same facts and issues have outcomes similar to cases that have been decided.
