Understand the importance of differentiating between the individual and the disability
1.1 - Explain the importance of recognizing the centrality of the individual rather than the disability.
The centrality of recognising the individual rather than the disability is important in that by acknowledging, the individual you will be recognizing that they are important regardless of their disability. It validates the fact that the individual with a disability has the same rights just as a non disabled individual. As much as the disability needs to be acknowledged because it is real it should not overshadow the individual. The aim is to help people to see the person first, not the disability.
1.2 - Explain the importance of an assessment being person centered
When an assessment is person centred the importance of it lies in the fact that it focuses on the person and considers the interaction between the individual their environment. Knowledge of the individuals provides a better understanding of the person as a whole. The person is involved throughout the whole process and the right level of care and support can then be tailored to the individual
1.3 - Compare the difference in outcomes that may occur between focusing on an individual's strengths and aspirations rather than their needs only
Focusing on an individual’s strengths and aspirations might result in an outcome were an individual may not be fully supported to function independently. Needs are important and individuals with physical disabilities might need help with their basic needs such as bathing or dressing even though they might lack the strength and aspiration. And a lack of focus on an individual's needs might result in an outcome were an individual is deprived the opportunity of a balanced quality of life in which they can learn and develop their self esteem and confidence in areas they might lack the ability.
