Studying the Universe
STUDYING THE UNIVERSE * Before 1610, people viewed celestial bodies with their naked eyes. * In 1610 Galileo Galilei first used a telescope to observe celestial bodies. * In the following centuries, astronomers developed more powerful telescopes. * However, details gathered by means of scientific instruments were not enough to satisfy scientists.
TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENTS * Scientists have developed advance equipment in order to explore Earth and other celestial bodies closely. * These pieces of equipment have enabled man to land on the moon and other planets to gather actual soil and rock samples. * These advancements include artificial satellites, space shuttles, space stations, and other spacecrafts.
ARTIFICIAL SATELLITES * These are man-made bodies orbiting Earth. * Originally, they were launched in order to observe Earth’s weather conditions and ocean currents from a distance. * Eventually, satellites have been used to investigate the space environment, including our moon and the other planets in our solar system.
SPUTNIK 1
It was in 1957 when the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched into space by the former USSR. It carried a radio transmitter and was the size of a football.
SPUTNIK 2 * Sputnik 2 carried a dog named Laika into space
Explorer 1 * The US launched its own first satellite, Explorer 1, into space on January 31, 1958. * Explorer 1 discovered and studied the Van Allen belts, the radiation areas around the Earth.

Other Artificial Satellites * Other artificial satellites launched were the former USSR’s Luna 2, the first space probe to reach the moon on September 12, 1959 * This includes the USA’s Tiros 1, the first of a series of highly successful weather satellites launched in April 1960.
THE FIRST AMBSSADOR OF PLANET EARTH * On April 12, 1961, Vostok 1 of USSR carried the first human into space. * The flight of Yuri Gagarin, the first “Ambassador of

Vanguard, by 1957, was off to a slow start. The first satellite launch facility was only built that year in Cape Canaveral, Florida (Naval Research Laboratory), and TV-2, only the third test vehicle for stage one, was being tested. It was at this time when project…

That same year President Eisenhower signed the public order which created the National Aeronautic and Space Administration (NASA). After the creation of NASA the Space Race would continue to heat up when the Soviet space program launched Luna 2 which was the first space probe to hit the moon. As if that accomplishment wasn’t enough the Soviet continued to soar forward in Space exploration being the first country to send the first person to orbit the Earth. This was done so in a capsule-like spacecraft known as Vostok 1. The United States could not just sit back and be out done, so with much effort they build a smaller, cone-shaped capsule that was found to be far lighter than Vostok. This capsule would be used to test and conduct Project Mercury, an American name for the efforts to send a man into space. The U.S. used chimpanzees to test the space craft, and made one final test in March of 1961. On May 5, 1961 Alan Shepard became the first American in space. Later that same month President John F. Kennedy decided to make a bold and powerful statement which would claim that the U.S. would land…

    Apollo Program History

Amidst the shortcoming of the Cold War, the goal of the 1960’s was “to go above and beyond” in space exploration by successfully landing a man on the moon, which would serve as a gambit to conceivably lead the United States to victory. Before astronauts ventured beyond the earth, scientists had to assess the space environment and the hazards of human exploration. Soon after President John F. Kennedy assumed office in January of 1961, the space race was undoubtedly underway, and the United State’s primary focus was landing a man on the moon--hence, the Apollo Program. These Apollo Missions are significant in that America received technical credibility and hasted the end of the Cold War in our favor. Also, Carole Stott, a long-time astronomer…

When considering what factors go into memorializing an event or person and in creating a monument, what must groups and agencies consider? What is it that makes a monument stand out from all the rest, is it the bold message the monument states, is it preserving the monument, or is it the monuments location? What stands out above all the rest to me when creating a monument? It’s the pure site of the monument, the long lasting impression that stays with you after viewing a monument. Being able to look back and remember what it all meant, that’s what’s most important when creating a monument.…

On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched the first satellite into space, The Sputnik I. This was detrimental to the U.S. because it meant that they were losing the space race. The Soviets showed the U.S. that they now had the capability to launch satellites and nuclear warheads into space. America quickly answered back with the launch of Explorer I, which was the first American made satellite to orbit around Earth. This achievement by the U.S. led Eisenhower to form the National Aeronautics and Space Admission (NASA). The organization was founded to study and build space exploration vehicles and scientific experiments. Soon after the formation of NASA, the Soviets launched the first man into the orbit of Earth, heating up the space race. Nearly a month later, NASA launched Alan Shepard into space, making him the second man to exit Earth’s atmosphere.…

October 5, 1957; this is the day that went down in history as the day the Space Race between the United States and the USSR began. On this day the USSR successfully launched the Sputnik satellite into orbit around the planet. Close to a month later the USSR launched the Sputnik 2 which held the first living organism to orbit the planet; Laika the dog. The series of events that followed brought change to the Cold War and to the world that could not have been foreseen in terms of international relations. During the Cold War the balance of power, globalization, perception, and nationalism all came into question, especially looking at the effects of the Space Race.…

ISRO has achieved numerous milestones since its establishment. India's first satellite, Aryabhata, was built by ISRO and launched by the Soviet Union in 1975. Rohini, the first satellite to be placed in orbit by an Indian-made launch vehicle, SLV-3, was launched in 1980. ISRO subsequently developed two other rockets: the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) for putting satellites into polar orbits and the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) for placing satellites into geostationary orbits. These rockets have launched numerous communications satellites, earth observation satellites, and, in 2008, Chandrayaan-1, India's first mission to the Moon.…

An Artificial Satellite is a people-made machine that orbits a variety of other objects in space. Many Artificial Satellites orbit the Earth to gather information about the universe, to predict the weather, to help with the navigation of ships and planes, to assist in telephone calls over the ocean, to observe the Earth, and as a tool to improve military activities. Though Artificial Satellites have mostly orbited Earth, some have orbited the moon, the sun, asteroids, Venus, Mars and Jupiter; these satellites mostly study the body around which they're orbiting. As a satellite is any object that orbits another, Artificial Satellites are people-made. Natural satellites include the moon around the Earth and the Earth around the Sun.…
