In 1872, a naturalist and surveyor by the name of Verplanck Colvin found the source of the Hudson River. It is a small pond on the south western slope of Mt. Marcy, the highest peak in the Adirondacks, called Lake Tear of the Clouds. So little is Lake Tear of the Clouds that if no water was to feed it for seven days it would be reduced to just an empty basin. Nevertheless, the Hudson starts right in its waters. One could say the Hudson River is divided into two distinct sections differentiated by geology and appearance. The first section winds its way through the Adirondack Mountains spanning 166 miles from Lake Tear of the Clouds to the Federal Dam in Troy. This section is un-navigable by boat and in some places somewhat rapid. The second section, which is quite different from the first, starts at the Federal Dam and runs for 149 miles through the “rolling hills” all the way to the Narrows between Brooklyn and Staten Island. Back up north at Lake Tear of the Clouds is fed by natural springs and runoff from the sheer steepness of Mt. Marcy and other streams winding down from the high peaks of the Adirondacks. Throughout the whole Adirondack mountain range, the watershed drains and dumps runoff from 3,400 foot peaks into the lowlands less than 410 feet above sea level. From Lake Tear of the Clouds [in the space of a mile] the river drops 1,000 feet down a deep trench…

Bridges are something that have always fascinated me. In my picture you can see I have the Julien Dubuque Bridge in the background. This bridge is a two lane bridge, it has been debated through the past years on if this bridge will be altered in the future. I think it would be a very interesting lesson for the students to look at adding lanes on the bridge. They could choose to expand the bridge into four lanes, build a second two-lane bridge, or tear down the current bridge and replace with a four-lane. During this project students would need to keep in mind that the Julien Dubuque Bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. They would also have to factor in construction time and possible road detours to decide what would…

"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is about this southern planter Peyton Farquhar being hanged by the Union Army during the Civil War for trying to burn down Owl Creek Bridge. Ambrose Bierce depicted the entire story as if the rope around Farquhar's neck breaks and that leads to Farquhar falling into the river below, and then escaping back to his farm; where he reunited with his wife. Then at the end of the story, Bierce revealed to the readers that all the events were simply Farquhar's imagination at work in the few seconds between the drop of his rope and his death. In summary, he died and the rope did not break which allowed him to swim down the river.…

“And on your left you’ll see one of the tallest waterfalls in the world” the train conductor announced. Everyone shuffled for their camera to capture the moment. As the scene came into view the cog train was filled with the sound of a disappointed gasp, followed by glances to the vested instructor that read ‘are you kidding me’. The “waterfall” looked more like a miniscule stream than a massive landmark he told us it would be. Because we were near the top of Pike’s Peak, he wasn’t completely wrong. We were expecting something the size of Niagara Falls.…

This time period introduced a construction boom, or a period of rapid economic growth, which resulted in new and improved structures for society. Manhattan, New York was a highly industrial city, therefore, many citizens of New Jersey found work there, and the only mode of transportation for the workers across the river was by ferry. Due to its rapidly increasing population, New York City was forced to expand outward. Citizens were forced to move to the suburbs of New York, and some even to New Jersey, resulting in a more difficult and involved commute to work. Together, Ammann and Gilbert had the idea of creating a new bridge in order to establish a more efficient mode of transportation for workers whose jobs were across the river. Ammann and Gilbert envisioned that the Bayonne Bridge would connect New Jersey to Staten Island, providing a faster route for…

The Cuyahoga River was the heart of the land and the quality of the river was a direct reflection of how people viewed the quality of their life. The river is 100 miles long and it’s a place where tycoons and legends were made but the wild river was tamed but then poisoned and the environment was destroyed. Oil, debris and pollution accumulated on top of the water. People eventually woke up to the danger and tried to save the river and the world. They hoped that they could bring the river back because the water of the river sustains life and they could not change the community until they started with the Cuyahoga River.…

I wanted to stop right in the middle of the Golden Gate Bridge, put my kickstand down, and get off my bike. I wanted to stand right on the bridge and pump my fists in the air like I was Rocky after making it to the top of the stairs. That was the moment of the trip that signified the entire thing. Everything before lead to that moment; everything after was homeward bound. I thought it might be the Bixby Bridge; it wasn’t. It was the Golden Gate, and the traffic, the view, the ocean, the people, my friends, and my bike made it the special moment it ultimately became. It was, as Joe noted, “an iconic…
