Although suicide is a major problem in the U.S., the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention is helping prevent many suicides by providing people with information and counseling. Many of these people feel like they are worthless and could never amount to anything, which leads to depressing thoughts. These thoughts and feelings are very common and can lead to suicidal tendencies. The people who work at AFSP have come up with many solutions to lessen the depression and suicidal tendencies of the American people. There are many people that suffer from depression. Most who suffer are “Blinded by feelings of self-loathing, hopelessness, and isolation, a suicidal person can 't see any way of finding relief except through death” (Smith et al). When someone is depressed they can feel like they hate their life and feel hopeless . They often say they want a new life; however, in their hopelessness, some ultimately attempt taking their own life as a last resort. “If your depressed, compulsively eating or gambling, not sleeping properly or even just moody, you’re probably lacking serotonin” (Veracity). Serotonin keeps bodies healthy and helps control mood swings and appetite. But if produced in excess, it can be bad for the body and affect personality. “Even worse, recent research published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS Medicine reveals the antidepressant drugs don 't work any better than placebo at reducing depression” (Adams).
