The character Hop Frog in “The Eight Chained Ourang-Outangs” is justified in the murdering of the King and his seven ministers. The first reason is that Hop Frog is not there voluntarily. He is captured, along with a dancer named Trippetta, by a general and is presented as a gift to the King. This is another joke the King laughed at. The two dwarfs are used as entertainment for the King throughout the story. The King describes Hop Frog’s value as a “trebled” since he is a jester, a dwarf, and a cripple. He is made fun of the way he walks, even though he cannot help it. The King goes to the extreme by making fun of his disability: “In fact, Hop-Frog could only get along by a sort of interjectional gait-something between a leap and a wriggle-a…

Neferet is also like a motherly figure towards Zoey consider she stood up for Zoey. The readers know this due to Neferet standing up for Zoey when her mother and John come to the school when the parents are welcome to visit. During this time, John starts insulting the school and Zoey, which causes Neferet to intervene and stand up for Zoey and the school. The readers also know this as a result of Neferet standing up for Zoey when the police come in the school to question her about some deaths of teenagers. Over this time, the police asked if Zoey had anything to do with the deaths, which brings up Neferet’s motive to defend Zoey to the police with little discretion. Neferet is very motherly towards Zoey, however she may have another side to her. I believe Neferet as another side to her, as a result of her being awful to Aphrodite and being involved with the “ghosts” somehow. Neferet doesn’t seem to believe Aphrodite’s visions anymore. The…

While Nea and Sourdi were working at their family’s restaurant, several male customers become drunk and obnoxious. When one of the men begins making rude gestures and remarks to Sourdi, Nea takes it upon her to “save” her older sister. Nea decided in that moment that she needed to do something drastic in order to complete her rescue mission, so she took a pairing knife and stabbed the man in his arm with the intentions of killing him. All Nea cared about was her sister’s safety, she didn’t think of the consequences nor did she expect to be wrong for her heroic behavior. “’I was trying to protect you,’ I said through my tears. ‘I was trying to save you’” (Chai, 2001). Nea didn’t understand why she was being punished for trying to protect her sister, she believed that she did right. This shows how loyal Nea is to her older sister and how she can be possessive at times. “I was glad I’d stabbed that man. I was crying only because life was so unfair”…

Before the incident, Nel displays the genital stage, suggesting sexual maturity. For example, on the night she is wed to Jude, Morrison says, “They had taken a housekeeping room...and were getting restless to go there” (85). This shows an interest in sexual acts. Ten years later, when she sees Sula…
Shame in the story is exposed to be a vital fact in the community. The shame that individuals feel towards Sula and her immoral action causes them to act differently. Throughout her life, Sula attempted to follow a specific standard of living. She thought that she could be an independent person in life although she lived a life of misery and loneliness. Sula, who does not observes and respect the society’s moral concepts is seen as a sexual symbol and sinful woman by the community. In the modern world, this kind of shame seems very common. In some societies, when women sleep around, they’re sluts, but men are a lack of shame when they sleep with women. That is not fair and it is sinful for both men and women. Morrison in her literature did…
