Executive Summary
The cost of hiring an employee is not limited to the salary agreed upon by the employee employer. The cost/benefit analysis becomes even more important when a rural public health agency is debating the decision to increase staff. Hamilton County Public Health is a rural agency. The public health agency serves the entire county of Hamilton. The agency has an extended list of services. The issues needing consideration: the cost of hiring a Registered Nurse, the cost of training/orientating a Registered Nurse, quality of care provided by agency, staff workload, funding availability to hire a new Registered Nurse.
The discussion of hiring a Registered Nurse for Hamilton County Public Health must not only assist with meeting the issues addressed previously, as well as financially making sense, but also must assist with meeting measurable goals. The consideration of increasing staff must benefit the entire agency. By hiring a Registered Nurse, ultimately the goal for Hamilton County Public Health would be to assist in decreasing staff workload, increase staff retention, improve agency moral, increase staff satisfaction, improve agency reputation within the community and provide more continuity of care to client.

Decrease the current workload. Our organization, particularly, likes to hire Registered Nurses. The Registered Nurse will be provided with specific training dependent on the program of service. The Registered Nurse may function in a case manager role as well as participate in the call rotation for skilled care that may be needed after hours and on holidays. Having an additional nurse on the team would allow for the call schedule to be more infrequent allowing staff more personal time and preventing “burnout”. Adding an additional Registered Nurse would allow for staff to be able to focus on their core populations during working hours instead of having to “wear several hats” due to the increase in referrals and admissions.
