Abraham is God’s sovereign choice and yet as God’s chosen patriarch is not bullet proof from committing sin against the God who has favored him. Abraham is not exempt from exercising his free will to make decisions, and with his free will, he chooses to trust himself rather than trusting in God.
The Bible tells us “There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death” (Pro 16:25 KJV). Abraham’s decision confirms the truth of this scripture. Abraham’s faith is weakened and demonstrated in his decision to lie, not once, but twice about Sarai being his wife.

She lies to God when she said, “She did not laugh” (Gen 18:15 KJV). Jacob lies to Isaac when he said, “I am Esau thy firstborn” (Gen 27:19 KJV). Isaac lies to Abimelech when he answers, “She’s my sister” (Gen 26:6-11 KJV). Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Sounds just like Abraham.
We can thank God for his endless mercy and grace for we all fall and come short of God’s glory. God chooses fallen man to carry out His will showing us that apart from Him we can do nothing but fail. God is holy and perfect, and apart from Him, we are unholy and imperfect.
Abraham and all the Old Testament saints did not have the power of God living on the inside of them, but we do. And, even though we do, we still are prone to choose the flesh over the Spirit. One day, we will be rid of this old sinful and corrupted body. The corrupted shall put on the incorruptible, and our earthly body will be replaced with our glorified bodies exempt from the sinful flesh.
Until that day, God promises to keep us and help us. “Greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world” (1Joh 4:4 KJV).
