During the adolescent years, the average child uses this time as experimenting and attempt to figure who they are, what they enjoy and what they want to peruse. However, Ed is raped, goes through several foster homes and has troubles dating, thus, his adolescence is indeed full of challenges.
SUPPORTING EVIDENCE #1 Going to Montreal o Mike Pasko is one of the Hudson Bay representatives that visit the children in the residential school. He promises Ed that if he comes to work with him in Montreal, Ed will receive money. o Ed is sexually abused (describes as), “Then he started rocking back and forth again, hips in time with his hand… my underpants were between his penis and my skin.”(Metatawabin 124)

SUPPORTING EVIDENCE #3 FINDING LOVE o At St. Anne’s, boys and girls are separated, so it is seen as a sin to come into contact with someone of the opposite gender. Thus, when Ed enters the real world and finds a woman who name is Joan, he struggles communicating with her as he mentions, “Was she flirting with me? I never got much dating experience...” (Metatawabin 136) o Love is also changeling because of Ed’s race. When he meets Joan’s father, Ed is accused of, “marring out – of betraying [his] race by choosing someone white.” (Metatawabin 153) The Aboriginals are seen as a minority and not accepted by the white culture. o Due to Ed’s childhood where he feels no love at St Anne’s and is raped, it decreases his chance to find true love because of his incapability to trust anyone. This is a mental/emotional abuse Ed faces.
