D-Writing Assignment: Impact of Fertile Crescent Cultures
The first civilizations ever to be recorded in History were the Fertile Crescent cultures, these cultures characterize for being near sources of water for irrigation, which means that they could grow crops for food and farm for animals and their products. All these civilizations where near the Mediterranean Sea and the Persian Golf, for centuries they were called Mesopotamia. These civilizations were between two rivers, Tigris and Euphrates.
The Sumer civilization was located in southern Mesopotamia, northwestern from the Persian Gulf. The name Sumer comes from the language Akkadian and means “land of the civilized kings”, and the citizens
called themselves “the black headed people”; their script language was called Cuneiform.
Uruk is know to be the first city in the history of humans but then the Mesopotamians believed that the gods gifted humans with the ability to cultivate society so they created Eridu, also known as the city where “civilization” began to exist.
The Assyrian civilization was located in northern Mesopotamia, northwest from the Persian Gulf. Assyrian’s predominant language was the Akkadian before Aramaic replaced it due to its popularity and because it was easier to use and understand. They obtained dominance when the Hittite empire fell (which used to be one of the greatest empires of Mesopotamia). Their government was the first to actually be efficient and well structured, they were strict and had a hard fist on the people so they would obey, they also had a different king for every sector since a centralized government would lead to losing far away lands from the actual kingdom; every sector had to pay their taxes so they could keep military defense. They stood out in their knowledge and their libraries, they most famous piece of literature was the Epic of Gilgamesh. Unfortunately the empire fell to pieces due to its enormous size.
