What does Genesis 1-11 Teach Regarding the Natural World, Human Identity, Human Relationships, and Civilization?
Genesis chapters 1-11 explain many different aspects involving the natural world, human identity, relationships, and civilization. All of these aspects help better our understanding as Christians in determining our worldview and how God intended for human kind to go about their lives through His creations and development of the world.
Genesis chapter 1 begins with creation. Genesis 1:1 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (New International Version). God’s creation is the start of the natural world. The first civilization is found in Genesis 4:17 when Cain built a city, Enoch. Many different aspects of life developed in the city that Cain had built but none of it was pleasing to the Lord because men did not call on the name of the Lord (New International Version). We also see civilization reoccur when God sent the Flood to destroy the wicked world because Noah was the only righteous man. God allowed Noah to survive the Flood so that He could rebuild the world through Noah (Genesis 6-9, New International Version). Genesis 9:1 says, “Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth” (New International Version). Noah rebuilt the earth and increased the population like God commanded him. Civilization was established in the world after the flood when God commanded in Genesis 11:7, “Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other” (New International Version).
