Summary: Interview With Demetrio

There are some parts of the interview that I found particularly interesting that relate to the concepts in this course. The first part is that Demetrio came into the country illegally and was later to become a business owner of the auto sales outlet. The way he was able to relate to the society around him is surprising given that he did not know any one person who spoke English during his first months in the united states. He also notes that capitalism is the one which attracted him to the United States and it is the system that seemed fair to him. The first one is that a disadvantage of partnerships is that they can lead to a partner stealing profits from you. It is better to have a limited partnership compared to a general one as a protection against some of these issues. I also believe it is essential to have a strategic business program as opposed to operating without any clear guide. I believe that Demetrio can benefit from a business plan and a marketing plan. These plans would help him to grow better and realize more profits. There is also a lot of importance of being a corporate citizen. The business needs to be part of the community and support it in whoever way they can. Being a member of the community is a way of marketing and getting people to identify with the products and services that one is offering. Another lesson that can be learnt from this is that one should go with the changing times when it comes to business. When one fails to adapt to the changing times, chances are that competitors will surpass him and take up their market share. Despite it being an old business, Demetrio has invested in social media as a marketing method and it has paid off. He has a strong presence online and he can reach more customers at a cheaper cost. He however understood the sole proprietorship and the things that it entails. He could not nonetheless differentiate the characteristics of the various forms. Demetrio did not have any clear strategic plan for the business, but the ideas were only in his head and therefore he scored a 1 on the awareness of strategic business plans. He did not show a clear understanding of the external environment and did little to mitigate the effects. He however understood the import market, and therefore he scored a 2. Demetrio scored a 5 on adaptation to change because he has changed his marketing ways to include social media which is a leading tool for all businesses.
