Summary: Memo # 3: Critical Design Review
To: Dr. Schmidt
From: The STEMinists
Subject: Memo #3: Critical Design Review
Date: November, 1 2017

This is a critical design review for the escape room design project. First, the review contains a final sketch of the team's concept design including specific dimensions and illustrations of all of the different functions. Next, both proofs of concept one and two are presented and analyzed based on results from the initial testing. These were incorporated into the alpha prototype which is then discussed in detail. Special notation is given to all changes made from the preliminary design and concept sketches to the alpha prototype. Afterwards, all further plans for the beta prototype are outlined for the continued development of the design.

A string with a paperclip on the end (for ease of attachment) was fastened to the door latch. The other end of the string was run over a pulley that was positioned on a stand several inches above the latch. A small cup was tied to the other end of the string and hoisted up several inches into the air. When the marble was dropped into the cup, the weight of the marble pulled the string and the pulley changed the direction of the tension causing the string to pull up on the door latch and open it. In the complete Alpha prototype, a golf ball is used instead of a marble and it rolls into the cup from a slide. For simplicity during the proof of concept, the marble was manually dropped into the …show more content…
In the second memo, it was decided that concepts 2 and 3 would be merged into one design. That design would be activated by a string pulling taught on the back of a water bottle causing water to flow out onto a series of gears. The gears would then turn and flip a switch, completing a circuit, and turning on a small fan. This fan would then blow loose baking soda into vinegar and the two would react and expand. The expanded chemicals would then push a marble that would roll down a series of slides and into a cup on one side of a pulley. Finally, the weight of the marble would cause the pulley string to pull up on the door latch and open it. During testing and construction, it became apparent that several of these energy transformations were inaccurate and ineffective and several critical changes were

As you can see from these photos you tried rolling your marble down single run. You found that the marble would roll off the table. To solve this problem you added lots of blocks to the end of the run but this meant that the marble could not travel along the run as you had blocked up the wrong end and the marble got stuck down the first block you put it in.…

The six simple machines are lever, inclined machines, screw, pulley, wheel and axle, and wedge. All were used in our project. First, the lever. We used levers multiple times in our machine. The first lever is on the first mousetrap, the metal part that snaps on the mouse. The second lever is the popsicle stick under the skateboard. This lever kicks up the skateboard so it moves down. The third lever is a group of levers. They are the dominoes set off by the skateboard. The fourth is on the second mousetrap, on the metal part that traps the mouse The last lever is the cup between the two pieces of wood by the pulley because the attached weight is like the levers fulcrum, making it snap to drop the marble…

The first step to conduct this experiment is to set up your ramp, whether it is a pool noodle or flexible pipe insulation. Adjust the ramp to the correct height you chose for this investigation. Next, place the 4 textbooks exactly 84 centimeters from the wall. Then place the cup exactly 40 centimeters from the 4 textbooks. Now it is time to start the actual experiment. Take your marble and place it at the top of the ramp. Let the marble roll to to end of the ramp and record whether or not the marble landed inside of the cup. Repeat these steps adjusting the height of the ramp as you go depending on where the marble lands. The data was used to determine what height was the best for the marble to land inside of the target cup. The data was analyzed by comparing the different heights to the number of times the marble landed in the target…

A wondrous thing is defying nature, which is the purpose of a device built to stop an egg from breaking at a height of 7 meters. The egg will fall onto a piece of paper, with cotton underneath, which is supported by a net of rubber bands, which are hoisted up by thick wood sticks. Also balloons are tied below to catch some of the force, and then just drop the egg. After the egg was dropped, it was a success; it landed smoothly and had no cracks. So this device catches the egg, and the force the egg brings so that it lands safely.…

Being new to the health care professions I am not very familiar with most of the technologies used today in our health care system and have also been fortunate enough to not need much care beyond a checkup here and there. However, being very interested in science I know how great the benefits of medical technology advancements can be to our nation and the world. I am choosing to focus on the technology of electronic health records (EHRs) as I feel they will greatly help patients and physicians once the transition from paper records is completed. There are many articles on this topic, but I chose to use one that incorporated a bit of the new health care law that recently when into effect. That law is the Affordable Care Act (ACA) which is currently working to reform our health care system. The article The Affordable Care Act and Electronic Health Care Records: Can Technology Help Reduce the Cost of Health Care? is a good place to start when it comes to discussing desired affect EHRs could have on our health care system as well as the more likely reality. I chose this article because it discusses the costs of health care and how EHRs affect those costs.…

The United States should absolutely terminate the Electoral College. Many sources of evidence support this decision. First, one should discover the time when the Electoral College came into American government and how it works. After that, one should understand why states have an issue with the Electoral College. Concerning the before mentioned comments, many will agree that the Electoral College is merely tradition and is not necessary for our modern American elections.…
