In the 1969 novel, ‘Slaughterhouse Five’, Kurt Vonnegut successfully manipulates traditional narrative devices and literary techniques to position his audience to align with his ideologies of the catastrophic effects of war and the misconception of freewill. Vonnegut establishes his novel to reflect his beliefs and values, and does so through the narrative structure, symbols and motifs, and point of…

(MIP) This meme focuses on happiness in the society. (SIP-A) The main goal in this meme is to persuade families in the society to get off their TV and make them think about if they are happy. (STEWE-1) Clarisse asks, “are you happy?... All of the nonsense”(8-9). Montag thinks he is happy early on in the book but later understands he is not. He is forced to think from characters like Clarisse and Faber who are different just like Montag. (STEWE-2) Montag knows he isn't happy and knows that Mildred and her friends aren't either but he doesn't say anything or do anything to help. “Nor peace, nor help for pain; And we are here as on a darkling plain swept with confused alarms of struggle and flight, where ignorant armies clash by night” (97). The…
Symbolism is something that many others use in their writing to give meanings without coming out and saying it. The dictionary states symbolism as “the art or practice of using symbols especially by investing things with a symbolic meaning or by expressing the invisible or intangible by means of visible or sensuous representations as artistic imitation or invention that is a method of revealing or suggesting immaterial, ideal, or otherwise intangible truth or states.” When authors do this it lets readers get different ideas as what they mean as they read the story, which makes them think a lot more as they read the story. This story has a lot of symbolism, most of it…
Chapter 2 of The New Jim Crow focuses on how the system of mass incarceration works. Alexander concentrates on the "War on Drugs," because "convictions for drug offenses are the single most important cause of the explosion in incarceration rates in the United States." Early on, she exposes myths, noting that the war is not "aimed at ridding the nation of drug 'kingpins' or big-time drug dealers," and the drug war is not "principally concerned with dangerous drugs" (60).…

Symbolism is used to provide a deeper meaning to things; it leaves the audience thinking about a more profound message than what is seen on screen, or written on paper. Anything from objects to weather to characters can be used to represent something else, something that the author thinks is important to share. Imperfection is a common theme in Edward Scissorhands and The Night Wanderer, both works similarly try to convey the message that everyone has their own flaws. Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands and Drew Hayden-Taylor’s The Night Wanderer both use symbolism to display flaws in characters, and the audience grasps onto the idea that perfection isn’t everything.…
Humans can make interpretations. We don’t have to take everything literally; we can see below the surface of events, and we can “read between the lines.” Symbolism is one important tool authors use for conveying meaning “below the surface.” By being able to “read” symbols, the reader can understand the main themes or messages about life that the author is suggesting. Symbols can also clue us in about future events in the plot. Although the ultimate ending of Shirley Jackson’s short story “The Lottery” is a shocking…
Ideas surrounding utopian and dystopian societies are popular because they show readers a worst case scenario for the future without having to live through it, an example of this worst case scenario in writing is the story “Harrison Bergeron” which is about a dystopian society where the majority of the population believes that they live in a utopian society. The government achieved this “utopia” by making the citizens equal and this means bringing those who are above average down, through handicaps; which limits those qualities that made them above average. In “Harrison Bergeron” the worst case scenario is the handicaps and everyone being average, or as they believe, everyone is equal, ”THE YEAR WAS 2081, and everybody was finally equal. They…
It should be understood that symbolism can have meaning outside the story. The author could be relating to him or herself, which means that symbolism could mean anything to the author. But, that means it can be hard understand, as you don’t have the same experience as the author but there will probably be something in the passage that hints to the authors meaning, queuing you to understand the…
Over the years, dystopian novels have become a favorite for readers all over the world. People find it intriguing to read about future societies and how the characters act in these ways of life. The societies in these novels range from totalitarian governments or to a perfect society where everyone is equal to each other. The characters often find themselves in situations that make them imagine what it would be like if things were different in their society. This usually leads to the reader contemplating the same issues that the characters are faced with in the story. Ayn Rand’s science fiction novel Anthem and Kurt Vonnegut’s short story “Harrison Bergeron” put a substantial…
In the chapter “ Is that a symbol?” of his book How to Read Literature like a Professor, Foster explains that everything is a symbol, anything can have a deeper meaning. In paragraph 74 in the short story, “Harrison Bergeron,” Kurt Vonnegut uses the sentence “ They leaped like deer on the moon.” to represent the character that works with the government, Diana Moon. It symbols dancing all over the moon(her name). In paragraph 76 in the short story, “Harrison Bergeron,” Kurt Vonnegut uses the sentence “ The studio ceiling was thirty feet high, but each leap brought the dancers nearer to it.” to represent them getting their…
Symbolism was found many times throughout the story. The first time I came around symbolism was when the family was talking about Toomsboro. Toomsboro sounds a lot like tomb so that symbolizes the eventual fate the family will soon meet. The next symbolism I found was when The Misfit’s car was going down the road towards the disoriented family. The car was described as “big black battered hearse-like automobile (145).” The reason that this is symbolism is because a hearse is what carries coffins to funerals. The Misfit’s car represents the intimate death that the family will soon meet. Lastly, the final symbolism is the cloudless, sunless sky. Most people would think that a day with no clouds would be a beautiful, happy day filled with fun; however, this family in the story thought that but it turned out to be their worst day. Usually when a murder takes place it happens at night when it is dark and no one is around. This murder happened on a beautiful day, but the main reason I brought up this is because when The Misfit shot the Grandmother, she feel back looking up towards the beautiful sky with a smile on her face. This symbol represents that the Grandmother found inner peace with herself.…
U.S President is often considered as the most powerful person on Earth. U.S President has many powers, but President cannot misuse his powers. The system called checks and Balances keeps everything in order for the U.S government to run. If Congress thinks that the president is misusing his power, the congress can impeach the president, but in order to do that congress requires 2/3 of majority votes. There are three branches in the U.S government, Legislative, Executive, and the judicial branches. The president is the head of the Executive branch, which is responsible for enforcing laws passed by the congress.…
The symbolic message I feel that was given off from this particular piece of art was world peace of some sort. In the art there are many representations of various ethnicities such as the black lady in the upper corner, or the Native Americans in the center of the piece. I feel as if the author was trying to put various different ethnicities all on one piece of work to portray people coming together as a whole.…
