Summary Of Ask Me About My Pronouns
Before I listened the the presentation of “Ask Me About My Pronouns” by Robyn Ochs, I was thinking that I would have a hard time connecting it to race. However, during the speech there was many different ways that I could connect it to race. How both genders and races, have stereotypes to fit. How they get discriminated against if they don’t fit those stereotypes. Robyn Ochs gave many of examples of how people aren’t accepted, and it was very interesting to listen to. There are common stereotypes that everyone has to fall, we learn these stereotypes at an early age. We are taught that girls play with dolls, wear bows, and like the color pink. It is also taught that boys, play with trucks, they have to act strong, and they like the color blue. These stereotypes make it difficult for someone people to go against the grain and stand out. When someone is wants to go against the grain, society then discriminates against them. This happens to people of different races too, whites think that they are the normal and every other race is not. The whites then go as far as placing normal stereotypes within each race. She tolds us about Peggy McIntosh, an American feminist and anti-racism activist. McIntosh would use the term Invisible Knapsack. I knapsack, full of unearned advantages that set us up the achieve our goals easier than others. “White privilege is like an invisible weightless knapsack of special provisions, maps, passports, codebooks, visas, clothes, tools and blank checks” (White Privilege). She says that we are taught that racism puts others at a disadvantage, but doesn’t show whites that it gives them advantages.
