The Beck’s Depression Inventory was developed by Aaron T. Beck, PhD at the Center for Cognitive Therapy in Pennsylvania (Smarr & Keefer, 2011). Becks scale was developed by studying individuals from a psychiatric clinic and from the standard population (Smarr & Keefer, 2011). These individuals were seen on an outpatient basis and included individuals with psychiatric diagnoses, individuals who were in college, depression and depressive disorders, and substance abuse (2011).
The inventory correlates with the DSM-IV criteria for depression. It contains somatic, affective, cognitive and other symptoms of depression (2011). The test consists of 21 self-report questions that can be given in an individual or group setting (2011). The scale to score the inventory is as follows: 0-3 = minimal depression, 4-8= mild depression, 9-12 = moderate depression, and 13-12 = severe depression (Smarr & Keefer, 2011).
