In the article “Hooked on Gadgets and Paying a Mental Price” by Matt Richtel, we learn about the effects of being consumed by technology as well as multitasking. In the article, Richtel provides us with a real life example of the Campbell’s, and how Mr. Campbell’s addiction almost cost him a lucrative contract for his startup company. Also, we learn about how he could not even enjoy a family vacation without having his technological fix. Richtel also gives us hard scientific facts about the effects of technology and multitasking, such as the fact that multitaskers are less likely to be able to sort out irrelevant information and that multitaskers do worse when trying to juggle between tasks.…
Multitasking can be beneficial or just a waste of time. In “How (and Why) to Stop Multitasking Peter Bregman and “In Defense of Multitasking” David Silverman, both bloggers explain their points of view on multitasking. Bregman explains the reasons why multitasking is bad “I will not deny that single-minded devotion often produces high quality. Nor will I attempt to join the misguided (and scientifically discredited) many who say “Yeah, other people can’t do it, but I am super awesome at doing ten things at once” (656) he explained. Silverman strongly believes that as human beings we have the habit of always trying to do as many tasks or get more time out of a 24 hour day.…

In the excerpt from “The Meaning of Lives”, Susan Wolf presents a series of arguments explaining what it means for a life to have meaning. In this paper, I will consider her theory in relation to a specific example where someone has a choice between a meaningful life with difficulties and a simple, content life that is, according to Wolf, not meaningful. Let us imagine an opportunity given to a man called Galen, a former mechanical engineer who lives a remote life with his family on a small farm far from any civilization. He is offered the opportunity to live a relatively luxurious life in return for leading the construction of a new weapon that is a technological marvel far beyond anything else in existence. Though his life may improve as a result, Galen is aware that this weapon will be the source of pain and suffering for countless others.…
Novelist Ayn Rand, in her book Anthem, wrote, “My happiness is not the means to any end. It is the end. It is its own goal. It is its own purpose”. Although happiness may seem like a simple concept to many, sometimes we don’t recognize it but we always take different paths, face many obstacles, and spend most of our lives trying to achieve happiness. Depending on the circumstances, every person has their own definition of what it means to attain happiness, whether through wealth, success, health, love etc. Happiness is a notion that be developed by focusing on the smaller things in life which are not given a great deal of thought to, but still can heavily impact us. One of these smaller yet significant ideas in life is individualism. Today…
In his article “Fight of the Frazzled Mind,” Dr. Robert Epstein argues that the goal of living should be to attain a life that is productive, yet stress-free, because he believes with the right training and preparation, anyone has the ability to manage their stress—even before it starts. This can be achieved by using nondestructive, trainable skill sets, the two most important of which being stress prevention and source management. Many suggest, and put into practice, the belief that some stress is healthy, and can even assist one in becoming more productive. Dr. Epstein disagrees with this suggestion, and goes as far as to claim this “idea is flawed.” While he admits a low number of people “know how to be productive when they are not being pushed by stressors,” he goes on to stand by the idea that it is possible with the proper training.…
Abstract The aim of my research was to study automatic processes by replicating the previously carried out Stroop effect. The participants, 20 Richmond College students (10 boys and 10 girls) chosen by an opportunistic sample were taken into a quiet room separately, were presented with 6 lists of words, out of which 3 were congruent and the other 3 incongruent and the time taken for each participant to name the colour that the words were written in was measured and recorded. From this repeated measures design, the results were that participants took a considerably longer to name the colour in the incongruent words than the congruent words. This corresponded to earlier research carried out by Stroop and the results were highly significant to a 5% significance level and a critical value of 60.…
First off, multitasking is negatively affecting humans because it is shortening their attention span. Restak says, “Multitasking forces our brain to process ever-increasing amounts of information at, ever-increasing rates”(410). Because people are trying to process so much information at one time it’s forces our brain to adapt, and it’s choosing to adapt with ADD and ADHD. Attention deficit disorder (ADD) is the inability to concentrate on a task for a length of time. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder resulting in poor concentration and hyperactivity. These disorders are becoming more of a cognitive style, which isn’t a good thing. People need to focus on one thing at a time so their brain doesn’t adapt and change to make these disorders cognitive. In today’s society, technology is the controller of everything. People have to be connected to technology every second of the day. The plasticity of…
In chapter 4: Hey, bud. Can you do me a fava, it shows how a lot of plants have toxins to protect themselves from predator. G6P0 is an enzyme deficiency that throws the free radicals out so they can't cause any trouble within the cell. The Greek philosopher Pythagoras of Samos (c.580–500 bc) (he interpret the entire word terms for numbers and their systematic and mystical study, but he is best known for the theorem of the right-angled triangle) he warned about fava beans. The people have Favism. It is an inherited enzyme carried by 400 milli people. This enzyme is the most common deficiency in the world. People that have favism eat fava beans or take certain drugs severe anemia can lead to death.…
Working hard and living a busy life is not only a choice but also a responsibility that everyone must have. In addition, it is not everyone who lives a busy life does not enjoy their life. There are still many people who have to work so hard every day but still have healthy habits. They know how to balance their life between works, family and also have time for their personal’s passion. For example, people still have opportunities to have a vacation with their family once every two or three months. There are various ways to enjoy the life without taking break everyday after work.…
Tim Kreider's 'The Busy Trap,' is an expository essay in which Kreider speaks out about the world's endless obsession with unnecessary or daunting tasks. The article manages to paint a picture of what society views as 'busy' along with the negative impact has on one's mental health. Kreider states that society sees being busy as a means of seeming accomplished and productive. In today's society, being bogged down and having virtually no free time is deemed "good." It’s the rest of the world who are deemed "unimportant" in comparison to these overdriven, anxious individuals. Kreider not only targets adults who have fallen victim to the increase in the busy lifestyle but children as well who have taken on more than their little minds can wrap itself around.…
Multitasking in my opinion can be a good thing but also a bad thing. Researchers say many teens and children under the age 18 are more likely to multitask compared to mature adults. Technology has been the cause of young teens not paying full attention. Teenagers feel that they will miss out on important information so this messes with teen’s concentration. The brain cannot be at two places at one time. “Not only can people not process two tasks simultaneously, but it also takes longer to multitask than it would to do the individual tasks one after the other”, according to Steven G. Yantis. When a person tries to the do two things that require critical thinking and decision making, a delay is at the second task. When people multitask they are the ones that tend to forget or not remember what was done and get distracted easily.…
Melvin exhibits repetitive rituals such as locking his front door and opening the light switch multiple times. He is uncomfortable when others are touching him, and is troubled by the thought of germs and infections which is why he brings his own utensils in the restaurant and does not wear the suit provided by the restaurant. Also, he doesn’t want a change in his patterns which was evident when he wasn’t able to eat breakfast when Carol, the waitress who usually serves him during breakfast, wasn’t on duty in the restaurant one day. Besides his recurrent behaviors and actions, he is very sarcastic and pessimistic too, and seems to hate everyone around him such that he does not interact with others very well.…
Some people believe that multitasking is a beneficial way of getting multiple tasks done at once. While this can be true, there are also a number of negative side effects it can cause. First off, multitasking is also known as sequential processing. What this means is, we aren’t really multitasking. Essentially we are closing a ‘tab’ (task) in our brain and opening another one. We are only performing one task at a time, rather than a bunch at once even though it may seem that way. As mentioned earlier, this can have negative side effects on the brain. One example of that is over-stimulation. Once your brain reaches the point of over-stimulation, you lose productivity rather than gain it. You can have as much caffeine as you want, but there…
Life has many obstacles and it is up to the individual to either give up or to exercise perseverance. Gardner asks himself why is the pursuit of happiness a right written by Thomas Jefferson and how did he know to put the “pursuit” part in there. He realises that happiness is not a given right, it is the right to pursue happiness for those who are persistent and determined to achieve success. Happiness is productivity, hard work, and personal wellness to conquer difficulties in a constant…
