The first thing Mary can think of doing when she wakes up is going to the secret garden. I feel as if it pulls her in, as if Mary is attracted to the feeling she has when inside the garden. It’s beauty makes her see beauty in the rest of the world, like the beauty she sees in Dickon and his critters. She is drawn to the happiness it brings and then spreads the happiness through everything she says and does.

The way Mary talks about and describes the secret garden is so serene that I can actually see it myself. I typically have a really hard time trying to picture things in books, but she describes it so perfectly and beautifully I really believe I can smell the earth. It’s obvious she cares deeply about the garden, about her secret place, and the way she talks about it shows how close to her heart she holds it. I don’t know of any other way that is as perfect as this excerpt to show just how much growth Mary has gone through. She is truly happy here, as she tells Colin about the secret garden.
I also can’t help but feel like she is talking about herself as well. Her personality pushing up out of the soil of her skin, weakened from a coarse armor of bitterness and hate into a soft plot of grass all over her body. The curtains of roses growing into springtime is her hair growing thicker and healthier, and the nest the robin is building is nothing other than her mind expanding and growing and learning. It’s
