Summary Of Chapter 15: Nest Building
Chapter Fifteen: Nest Building
“A sudden thought made her scramble to her feet.
‘I can’t wait! I am going to see the garden!’”
The first thing Mary can think of doing when she wakes up is going to the secret garden. I feel as if it pulls her in, as if Mary is attracted to the feeling she has when inside the garden. It’s beauty makes her see beauty in the rest of the world, like the beauty she sees in Dickon and his critters. She is drawn to the happiness it brings and then spreads the happiness through everything she says and does.
“There was every joy on earth in the secret garden that morning, and in the midst of them came a delight more delightful than all, because it was more wonderful. Swiftly something flew across the wall and darted

Perhaps the leaves are beginning to break out and uncurl- and perhaps- the gray is changing and a green gauze veil is creeping- and creeping over- perhaps- perhaps- perhaps-’ very softly and slowly indeed, ‘the robin has found a mate- and is building a nest.’”
The way Mary talks about and describes the secret garden is so serene that I can actually see it myself. I typically have a really hard time trying to picture things in books, but she describes it so perfectly and beautifully I really believe I can smell the earth. Her personality pushing up out of the soil of her skin, weakened from a coarse armor of bitterness and hate into a soft plot of grass all over her body. The curtains of roses growing into springtime is her hair growing thicker and healthier, and the nest the robin is building is nothing other than her mind expanding and growing and learning. It’s

Also, she is planning a huge, affordable grief retreat full of healing exercises and speakers. She truly believes God has given her a gift with words. More than likely people will come up to her crying after one of her speeches saying how much the speech impacted them. She continuously inspires people, including myself, which is one of The Great Eight traits heros tend to have (Cherry, “The Psychology of Heroism”). In “10 Mary Street”, their connection to their house is established through the nurturing of their garden. A simile is used “tended roses and camellias like adopted children” to emphasise this strong connection to their garden and their immense care towards it. Peter gains joy and fulfilment from his garden and this enables his attachment to his home to grow. The personification of the house with its “china blue coat” gives a sense of security and warmth to the house, highlighting its significance in terms of their belonging. Although she seems happy with her current husband Henry, she never realized how much she loves it when they talk about her gardening, even slightly. She shows huge excitement when her husband mentioned her working in the orchard and replied, “maybe I could do it too. I have a gift for things all right. My mother had it” (Steinbeck 11). She showed a lot of excitement, but knew that it was one of the very few times that they ever talked about her hobby.…

It seemed like the garden of Eden had opened up on her front yard. “Wow did you do this all yourself”. “Yes this is my baby, I did it all on my own, I started it about 4 years ago and I just kept adding on to it”. “So why did you do it” the dumbfounded kid asked. Alina answered like a philosopher “It represents your life, you started as a little rose plant, as the years passed on, the soil started to become unable to support you, like your parents, you needed a gardener in your life so the gardener added some other plants and cared and watered them daily.…

“‘Oh!” cried Mary, ‘is he going away tomorrow? I am so glad!’” Even though she is glad for a reason that may seem selfish, I think that her excitement shows relief in the fact that she doesn’t have to fear someone will take the secret garden away from her. If the garden were to be taken away from her, she should believe she’d have nothing to be happy about anymore and would be extremely upset that her special happy place was gone. “‘Might I,’ quavered Mary, ‘might I have a bit of earth?’”…

The first theme to be discussed is man vs. self which is widely present throughout the novel ‘The Nest.’ Man vs. self can also be referred to as internal conflict which is the mental or emotional struggle that occurs within a character. Man vs. self in the novel relates to Robin’s battle with his inner self. Robin has to deal with the mystery of his mother’s death, the feeling of being unloved and the hatred from his father. This leads to Robin constantly questioning his own self-worth. Some self-posing questions directly from the text are “Why didn’t she take me with her? Wasn’t I good enough?” (Chapter 2, pg. 65) The novel ‘The Nest’ is written in first-person narrative which creates an intimate experience. This allows readers to see Robin’s opinions, thoughts, and feelings. When something triggers Robin’s emotions, unpredictable images pop in his mind. Examples of the flashing images in his head include corks popping, snakes hissing and violent images of him harming his father. Various techniques such as similes and personification have been used to describe these images. Some examples of these are “The sickening image builds up in my head like a shaken bottle of champagne”…

Mary, a member of the younger generation and like every other resident of Garden Place, "did not talk to many old people any more" and owned a house that looked like the one beside and across it. Mary, knowing both sides, and has heard both Mrs. Fullerton and her neighbors' stories, is in a dilemma. She sacrifices being the topic of gossip at the next coffee party and asserts her position as one who does not care how things look and stands up for Mrs. Fullerton. Mary differs from every other resident of Garden Place by showing vulnerability while her discrete refusal to conform with the others imperceptibly bridges the division between the two…
