In the book Style Lessons in Clarity and Grace by Joseph M. Williams and Joseph Bizup, expounds on lessons five and nine, cohesion, coherence, and concision. These two chapters helps the writer become clearer, and not cloudy. When the writer adds cohesion, coherence, and concision to their writing; their style of writing will become clearer so that grammatical issues will not prevalent. One thing of many which, Style Lessons in Clarity and Grace stresses, is that sentence structure is important. Readers enjoy reading sentences that is structured so that they are able to read seamlessly without being disconnected. A sentence should be connected together like a puzzle, everything should come together like
the picture on the cover of a puzzle box, (pg. 69). To understand why a picture of puzzle box is referenced with a good sentence structure, is to understand what cohesion, coherence, and concision mean. Cohesion could be seen as the substance that holds the puzzle pieces or sentence together, with the use of passive verbs. Cohesion comes to play when one sentence ends, and is links smoothly with the next sentence (p.66). Coherence could be seen as forming a unified whole; taking all the pieces in a puzzle box and making them into one whole picture as seen on the cover of the puzzle box (p.69). Concision is like taking those pieces of the puzzle that clearly matches the other without trying different pieces that do not match. The pieces of the puzzle should match clearly as matching your characters and actions with your subject and verbs (p.122). Our writing should be clear, just as the picture of a puzzle on the box top makes the puzzle clear. We take all these pieces of our writing such as delating meaningless words; by writing concisely we can eliminate command words that add little meaning to our sentence (p.123). delete double words, double words can slow down your readers (p.123). Delete words that infer; most readers do not like reading between the lines or drawing their own conclusion to what they may believe the writer is trying to say (p.124). rewriting a phase into a word shortens the sentence and assist in the progress of clear writing (125). Also, do not write in a negative form, but be more direct by writing in an affirmative way (p.126). Keep only adjectives and adverbs that assist the reader in understanding the passage (127). In conclusion cohesion, coherence is often used together resembling the same meaning. In return; it relates to how a passage sticks together to make a unified whole. Although, they are similar they are not the same. Cohesion as stated earlier is when one sentence ends, and is linked smoothly with the next sentence (p.66). Also concerning cohesion, a sentence should not end so that the reader want be surprised. The reader should not be able to anticipate how the sentence ends. Cohesion deals with a smaller area of the passage. Coherence is taking all the sentences to make a whole (69). Coherence deals with the larger picture, like looking at the box top of puzzle box to see what the puzzle looks like. Concision is being direct, allowing the reader to read without having to refer about what the writer is trying to say.
