The prisoners suffered from terrible punishment if they disobeyed orders like being put in the hole which was freezing cold or they were beat. The inmates were given a heavy workload everyday were forced to work in the harsh thirty below temperatures and they definitely were not properly clothed. Also they were forced basically fend for themselves with food they always had to fight for plates and even when they got plates the amount of food that they were normally served was barely enough to fill their hunger.

For one I would have to say that survival is the number one theme of this book because that is basically what Ivan’s day to day life is basically surviving to another day. There were plenty of obstacles that he had to face in his everyday life in the prison and he was in survival mode from the beginning until the end of his day. Also I chose unity as a theme for the story because Ivan and his Gang 104 had to be a strong unit because they at times relied on each other for safety, food and just support in general. Even though there were a few other themes that were brought up in this story I chose those two because I felt like they were the main important
