There is no longer a limit on how one could get their voice heard overall. In the past, one was limited as to how their voice could be heard in regards to antiracism. Per Tim Wise, an individual would have to know someone to get a book published. Individuals would have to send an article to a print
magazine and wait to hear a response if their article would be published. If the print magazine agreed to publish the article an individual would have to wait a couple more weeks to see the article published. If one wanted to have their voice heard they pretty much had to have the money to own their own printing press. Today these limits are no longer in place to get antiracist narratives published as the internet has changed this in the last 15 years. Social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. are readily available to get your voice heard. However, the same goes for the racist parties. Everyone now has a voice to speak in the digital world without any limitations.
Never read the comments from an antiracist article, tweet, Facebook post, etc. Tim Wise mentioned this because you will be bombarded with constant media comments that you must learn to sort through. Tim Wise mentioned that we have not had the capacity to discern from digital literacy to what is fiction and nonfiction to critically assess these messages. If you do respond to the comments, you will get push back from the other party. This could lead to unwanted back lash. Therefore, to save your ego it was suggested by Wise to not engage in their argument.
Another takeaway from this lecture was to be cautious of any research being done pertaining to civil rights online. I myself did not know that the domain www.martinlutherking.org was registered by Stormfront. Stormfront is a whit nationalist, white supremacist neo-Nazi Internet forum. This website discredits Dr. King and provides misinformation pertaining to the civil rights movement. I was amazed at the amount of poison being throughout the website. The website contained essays, a civil rights library that contained views from Stormfront, and flyers for students to pass out in school.
The digital world has provided us with many tools that can either be used in a positive or negative way. Antiracist organization are no longer limited in getting their voiced heard but the same can be said for the white supremacists and white nationalists. To keep your ego healthy, it is suggested that you ignore the comments and responses to social media postings to avoid any push back. Caution should be exercised when students are conducting research online pertaining to the civil rights movement. The positive effect that the digital world has had in our world is getting people out to antiracist movements and connecting people with one another.
