In McMillan’s essay, “Easing My Heart Inside”, writing has had a very broad influence in how McMillan views life and the many wonderful things it has to offer for her in her everyday life. She describes writing as being her escape, her safety, a place where she can be herself, something that has helped her mature, and the how the craft has chosen her. Through writing she would like to experience and feel why things are the way they are. McMillan explains how she likes to perceive different kinds of emotions. She is truly the definition of an outstanding writer and by reading this essay, we get the sense that she stays true to her work. McMillan references many authors and books in this essay such as, Amelia Earhart, The Brontë
Family, Robert Frost, John Steinbeck, James Baldwin, and Bartlett’s Quotations. In common, all of these people stood out from the crowd, became writers, and they inspired her as she grew to be a writer. It does not matter where you come from nor what your race you are because you have the ability to become someone the world will remember for many generations to come. In contrast, Amelia Earhart was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The Brontë Family opened up new worlds for writing. Robert Frost was a legendary poet. James Baldwin was an African-American novelist, essayist, playwright, poet, and social critic. John Steinbeck wrote a large variety of novels. I believe she included these specific author’s because they will continue to be legends for eternity. I have read every single one of these author’s before in my life and I can honestly say I love each and every one of their diverse writing styles. The overall tone of this essay is ambivalent. McMillan has many mixed emotions of how writing makes her feel and this shows the reader that she has a true passion for the craft. The type of language she uses is sometimes foul language because she is so deeply in love with writing that she does not know how to react. Her audience are to those who would like to possibly pursue a career in writing and to the ones who have a passion for something and are just unsure about something. She is trying to inform the readers that writing is such an amazing way to express how you feel and how you want to feel. McMillan shows what it is to be an inspiration for other like for my generation. McMillan’s purpose of writing this essay is for one, to let out her feelings towards the art she is deeply in love with and two, so that others can see there is more to writing than just words. She is a great influence for everybody because you should never do something you do not like. If you want to pursue something in life, it is important that it is because you have a deep passion for it or else, you will not be happy. It is not about how much money you get out of something, it is about doing something that will help others in the process. McMillan has a gift for writing and I am sure she will be remembered forever because of all the work she has put into her art. My opinion on this essay is it is very inspiring for me. After reading it, I felt even more motivated than before because life is full of great opportunities and someday I will find my true passion, and make the world a better place. I really loved this essay and I am so glad I was able to get to read such a beautiful piece of work. I learned so much great things from this and I am looking forward to share this essay with my friends. McMillan is going to change the lives of many through her writing and I hope to do that too someday.
