Descriptive Language In 'Immigrant' By Tan Le

I have not listened to a story that made me feel happy and sad at the same time except for Tan Le’s story. Le spoke about her family story of immigration. A four years old girl, a mother and a sister were trying to escape to Australia to find a better life. Her story showed us how life could be tough and bitter. She and her mother and sister struggled a lot until they survived. Le has used a descriptive language in order to make her story effective and hook her audience attention. To illustrate, there are many instances of using descriptive language in her story that explain how powerful descriptive language is and how it is able to transform the abstract thoughts. First instance is when she was in the boat with her mother and her sister, she said “the steady beat of the engine, the bow dipping into each wave, the vast and empty horizon’
She stated ‘’I looked through the shower screen and saw her standing on the other side. I knew she had come to say goodbye’’. Le described the place where she is when she received the news of her grandmother’s death. The words that came out from her mouth took us another level. She successfully found way to shows the amount of love she had and still have for her grandmother. She even chose the right words that made her audience imagine the tragic scene she went through. I really felt sad for her. It is as if she made me feel what she felt. Using a descriptive language is a way to share feelings as well. In conclusion, Words are more powerful than we expect and descriptive language is the best way to describe happy or sad moments because as we had seen it grabs audience’s attention, transmit abstract things such as sounds, scenes, and feeling to audience. Le was able to use the descriptive language the way she allowed us to live the moment with her. Had she not had used descriptive language, we would not be able feel her
