My daddy's name is John. He’s real funny like. Sometimes he seems a little mean but that usually on thursday nights. I hear people call him a bootlegger sometimes. It's the bann of the manufacture, transportation and sale of intoxicating liquors. I've heard my mom say it a few times to my daddy but never really understood it. Well all of a sudden in the middle of class, three policemen came in and said, “i need for Mary Lee and Sampson Lee to come with me immediately.” I was so scared. Sampson started crying and ran to me and i held his hand as we walked with the men. We left the school and and got into the police car. The police was very nice and gave my brother a sucker to calm him down. After about fifteen minutes we arrived at my house. There were many policemen in my driveway. I saw them put my dad in cuffs and take him to the cop car. Sam started crying again and i may have shed a tear or two. THis cop Named Dave took us inside and sat us down. He began asking us questions. Many of them we did not understand and some sounded crazy. He said things like, “Have you ever seen your father come in with a lot of a certain drink?” I then said that, “I don't think so.

When I first arrived, I had to fill out some paperwork. Then he took my license, made a copy and took the papers. When he finished with that, he showed me around the police station. It looked so much smaller than it really is. He showed me a few of the interrogation rooms they have. They aren’t at all how I imagined them. They are just small little rooms with nice comfy chairs and nothing else. I imagined it to be a dark room with little stools and a big table separating them, like you see in the movies. But it wasn’t at all. Then he showed me the evidence room. It was way cool. When they collect evidence they put each piece in a plastic bag after they take pictures of it and then they put it in a separate little locker and once or twice a week the police chief goes through and does the rest of the paperwork and documenting. I really liked that room. It also had the place they take blood work and test for drugs. Then he showed me a room where they take the polygraph test and fingerprints. It was full of different computers and machines. I found it very interesting because I didn’t know that police stations had all of that stuff. When he finished showing me the station we went out to his car and he explained to me all they have to do before and after every shift and arrest. They have to take out the seats and clean the floor so that if someone drops drugs they know exactly who they belong to. He also told me what all the things do in the car, but he said it would make sense if I could actually see it.…

It’s always on the back of my mind, and resurfaces to my thoughts when i’m in any social setting regarding Spanish—my second language. I am Spanish, more so than my other nationalities. My father was born in Puerto Rico, and my mother, although being born here, along with her mother being Czechoslovakian and Polish, my mother’s father was born in Puerto Rico much like my own father. It always boggles me why I don’t look more Spanish due to the more Spanish heritage I contain. When people see me, they only see my pigment—white. They don’t see the Spanish part supposedly until I tell them, then they give me a “Right” or “I see it now” as if they’ve known or had been guessing all along. I can brush it all off my shoulder until I try to speak Spanish to others which I…

My father is a Sicilian combat veteran from Brooklyn and my mother is an immigrant from El Salvador. The disparity of their backgrounds is immeasurable, but their lives have impacted me greatly. They divorced when I was 3, but their relationship is unbelievably strong. I lived in a diverse environment, speaking different languages and existing in polar opposite lifestyles. The dichotomy molded me and influenced my character, perspective and state of being. Under my father’s roof, I endured a military-style upbringing-but the love was apparent. I was encouraged to play sports and excel in my academics. I am competitive in nature, and exceeding was always my aspiration. However certain events have caused me to falter, but I now understand that the duty of each human is to delegate their time for the advancement of the species and if no one holds you responsible, it is imperative that you do so.…

Majority of the African American migrating North wrote letters to the Urban League, an organization that has helped many other African Americans migrate north. “Founded in New York City in 1911, the National Urban League (NUL) was the most important of the new social service agencies formed especially to address urban black conditions.” (Brown, p127) Along with the assistance from the NUL many migrants also wrote to a newspaper designed for African American readers, the Chicago Defender. Each migrate was hoping for relocation assistance from another family or any other organization willing to help in the move North. The goal of these letters first was to find work or establish a resume for the reader to help with job placement.…

As an Immigrant, there were many challenges I faced whether it's related to language or understanding the culture. My family moved to United States of America when I was in 6th grade. I was always told by my parents that building a successful career is very important. This idea of building a successful career never stuck in my mind until the junior year of high school when I all sudden all the teachers and counselors started talking about going to college build a career in a field that you were interested in and also important to you.…

The day started off as any normal day. My mother woke me up and said “we must go.” Her voice sounded very urgent for what I thought was just a trip to the grocery store. My mom laid my outfit on my bed and packed by book bag; that’s when I figured out that I was starting school. I wasn’t entirely oblivious to the fact that I was going to familiarize myself with a completely different environment, but I just thought I had a little more time to prepare. Well, it turns out that I was wrong. You see, I wasn’t your average pre-schooler who was nervous about making friends. I was the immigrant child who had never spoken a word of English.…

The interviewee I chose to interview is my mom, Maria Hernandez. She is currently 41 years old, she immigrated to the U.S.A when she was 20 years old. She came from San Luis de La Paz, Guanajuato, Mexico. My mom immigrated on November 1997. The reason why I chose to interview my mom was because before interviewing her I knew that she emigrated when she was 20 years old, and due to my dad already living in the U.S.A at the time. Therefore, I wanted to know if she had an easier journey to the United States of America and if she felt safer traveling in the late 90´s. Also, it could have made the journey easier due to her already knowing where exactly to travel to since my dad already lived in the U.S.A at the time.…

Growing up as the daughter of 2 immigrants isn't easy. There are a lot of people that discriminate them for "coming and having children just to get the benefits that our government gives". I know my parents didn't come for that. My mom came here because my grandma was really sick and she needed money so she could buy the medicine for her. My father came because he had just lost his brother and his family counted on him to bring food to the table and to keep a roof above his families head. People with power such as politicians describe Latinos as rapist , drug dealers, and thieves which not all of us are. There are always good and bad people where ever you go. They are describing them as if we are doing something wrong for trying to keep…
