The collective essays that ranged from religion and politics gave a tremendous historical perspective of the Middle East and how it has influenced the ongoing issues in the Middle East. Lewis uses credible sources from previous historians mainly those that deal with the long history of oppression while also having using sources that show the current political climate surrounding the Middle east. While I do recommend this book to people who are looking to gain a different perspective of Islam and the political structure of the Middle east it’s important to note that the book did contain some repletion throughout the essay making a little harder to read when you have read much of the same in the previous chapters. Overall, Lewis presented a great introduction to the Middle East by giving his readers a historical and modern perspective that ranges from conquest, history, and oppression, to justice, freedom and unity to give his readers a different perspective of the Middle East and how it has shaped it to what it is
