Title, Author, Genre, and Length: The book that I read this quarter was ‘God Emperor of Dune’. This is a Sci-Fi book written by Frank Herbert, is the 4th book in the series, and is 423 pages in length.
Main Characters: The main characters in this novel are: The protagonists, Leto II the God Emperor, Moneo his faithful servant, and Hwi the Ixian ambassador to the planet Rakkis. The antagonists in the plot are Duncan Idaho, who is the captain of Leto’s personal guard, and Siona, the daughter of Moneo and leader of rebels against ‘Leto’s Peace’.
Plot Conflicts: Within the plot, Leto struggles between retaining his last shards of humanity, ensuring mankind stays to the ‘golden path’, or in other words the path that ensures …show more content…
One of the most prominent being the fact that this is a very philosophical book. Before each chapter are excerpts from ‘journals’ that make you think. They also correlate very closely with the content featured on each chapter. Another reason I enjoyed this read was because of the vivid descriptions. At one point the book describes a scene that was part of the first book, but then shows with excellent word choices the ways that the scene has changed over thousands of years. A third reason is how relatable the characters are. Throughout the book many events occur, and the book allows you to easily tell what each character’s reaction is. Also, the characters are not too perfect, or in other words their reactions are something we may experience ourselves.
Recommended audience: I would generally recommend this book and it counterparts in it’s series to those who like to think. This book is a very grueling read in the sense that many will have to look words up and reread parts multiple times to glean their entire meanings. Ender’s Game is a comparable type of read to this, since both use the sci-fi genre to conceal their political and philosophical intentions.
