The Influencing Machine Analysis
A Critique of Brook Gladstone’s and Josh Neufeld’s “The Influencing Machines” Brook Gladstone is an author who published the article “The Influencing Machines” in 2015. On the other hand she is also a media analyst and a host of NPR’s in the media. Additionally she did not write this article on her own, she had the help of Josh Neufeld. Gladstone did the writing while, Neufeld did the illustrations. It was collaboration between both people. The central thesis of Gladstone and Neufeld is that we get the media we should deserve’ it does not control us. The issue it addresses is that the outer darkness is being put into the minds of people, but it was originally from their own thoughts and believes (Cook). Gladstone and Neufeld used history …show more content…
Brook Gladstone and Neufeld use a unique way to engage to her audiences by using a descriptive and entertainment style. They use a lot of details and word play in a simple way. By using simplicity in a style, the reader can understand the topic more accurately. However, if something is too simple than the reader will get bored because there isn’t enough material to get engaged with. Also the way they use history in their style to show the changes through the years is very intriguing. A nice example would be where she uses the romans in her illustration (333). Furthermore, the way the story feels when it's voiced is nice. Meaning of that is when someone is reading the story they can feel and hear the voice of the person writing. Feels like we are inside the head of Gladstone and Neufeld, seeing the process of how they think. Not to mention by doing so it really connects people with the authors themselves. Finally they're writing style is very unique and the way they try to connect with the audience differently than a normal author would is very refreshing to …show more content…
Brook Gladstone and Josh Neufeld in their thesis states that we get the media we deserve and it’s not controlled by humans but our dark thoughts. However, it’s vice versa, media does control what we do or sometimes it even takes over what we perceive to be true and as well as our lives. In now a day when looking around the environment everyone seems to have some machines with them, such as phones. By looking around it seems that the people are the ones being centered on technology. Overall just like how the moon revolves around the earth, the people revolve around machines. However Gladstone and Neufeld do have good visuals, style, and context that engage and connects with the reader in a unique way that is different from other authors. To put it briefly they had good illustrations that attract the audience towards the article. As well as having different forms of history really made the article stand out. Also the way they embedded themselves within the article made it as if they were there with us, guiding their audience through. All in all Brook Gladstone and Josh Neufeld have a unique, interesting and attracting article that gets the audience connected with

The article is composed of comics, which support technological advances and other strips of how technology is hurting us. For example, one comic shows a woman who characterized as the "slutty girlfriend, and the boyfriend is supposed to be a sex offender, the couple is holding hands and walking through town. The following comic is the same image of the couple, except the "slutty girlfriend's" face is blurred out and hidden.…

“Collectively, we are in thrall to media - because they deliver to us many of the psychic goods we crave, and we know no other way to live.” Quoted from Todd Gitlin. Media coverage played and still plays a huge roll in our lives. For many generations, especially for the millennial’s, its our only way of communication from what’s going on around us. We are now humans who are glued to our phones and computer screens. Its hard to know what is the truth and what is exaggerated, because there are so many sources from all different view points. Todd Gitlin writes about the importance of mass media and the connection with social movements in his book “The Whole World is Watching”. “Keyed in” published by Internet blogger Voxi is a persuasive article regarding the technological boom being experienced by not only today’s youth but by society in general. Published on May 23, 2009 on website Ctrl Alt “Keyed in” Voxi, contends that society and its members should herald the implementation of new technology and welcome it with open arms, contrasting the internet with great historical discoveries such as Darwinism and the reorganisation of the cosmos. The title itself has a double meaning, the first and most obvious of which is the literal keyboard associated with technology and the second refers to those who are keyed in to an ever-changing society and willing to move with it as opposed to be left behind. The article begins with a non-confrontational tone however throughout Voxi begins to show a more compelling tone. Accompanying Voxi’s article is a picture of a human head withholding a microchip that projects multiple layers, the main point of this is to make the reader think about how technology has been embedded into the core of society and implemented into every layer of the world today. Voxi’s contention is pro digital technology and is this is strategically withheld until the 5th paragraph so that readers will read on, curious of the writers contention…

The media has been around forever from the town crier to a commercial on the radio. While it can expand your knowledge, it can also make us over think useless things and be manipulated or controlled. Of course, they do this to draw in listeners and cause conversations. We see that the media affects the characters’ thoughts and knowledge in the allegoric novel, Animal Farm, by George Orwell. By reading Animal Farm, it shows us that we must be aware of the media’s reports, for they can easily manipulate us for the worst.…

In this essay I will be discussing new technologies and the impact it has on the ever growing industry that is the media, but in particular I will be looking at how new technologies have had an impact on journalism. Media tycoons have found themselves surrounded by millions of much smaller, yet potentially just as loud, media voices which are appearing more and more every day in the form of blogs on the Net. The introduction of new technologies and the change in journalism through the ages has had both positive and negative impacts.…
