Media coverage played and still plays a huge roll in our lives. For many generations, especially for the millennial’s, its our only way of communication from what’s going on around us. We are now humans who are glued to our phones and computer screens. Its hard to know what is the truth and what is exaggerated, because there are so many sources from all different view points. Todd Gitlin writes about the importance of mass media and the connection with social movements in his book “The Whole World is Watching”. Having become aware of the power of the media, activists sought the offensive, first through press communiques and news conferences, and later through carefully staged events that captured the eye and provoked the general public.” (116) Since the organization was getting so much attention they were receiving an overwhelming amount of new members; which in return started the rise of the SDS. The rise in the SDS was one of the first events to prove the impact on media coverage and our society. Anything so new, like the broadcast media, comes consequences that no one expects; because there was so many new members, the leaders began to loose their power, which caused issues which resulted in different views and goals for the group.
