ANT152 Final Paper
‘The media's the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that's power. Because they control the minds of the masses.’ (Malcolm X). Media shapes the way we see everything in life. From informing us about school/work closings (giving us the day off), to telling us how to dress appropriately by giving us the weather, to breaking the news of a tragedy that happened. The media has, and always will play a significant role in the world we live in. Every culture and every subculture use the media in diverse ways, well some see a more critical role for up to date information, some cultures do not need that as part of their everyday …show more content…
life. “Wisdom sits in Places” and the “Secrets of Anonymous” Show that contrast quite clearly. While for the Apache Indians, Media was used to pass along stories and traditions. In the case of Anonymous, the media was used to right wrongs and demonstrate the group's power to those it had vendettas against. With the evolution of media, play more critical role live now than ever. There is not a single aspect of our lives anymore but the media does not play a role in. Back in the time of the Apache Indians, life was a little different. Without today's media, the Apache Indians had to communicate and live much differently than we do today. No matter what type of Media is used, it shapes the community and the social world of its users. The media is giving a lot of power in every different Civilization. The apaches use the landscape as their source of media, while the group Anonymous, sticks to the Internet as main source of media.
The internet began as “Commercial Internet service providers (ISPs) [and started] to emerge in the very late 1980s… Limited private connections to parts of the Internet by officially commercial entities emerged in several American cities by late 1989 and 1990.” (The First ISP). Ever since that day the Internet continues to provide services to humans and make their lives easier. From looking up information to do papers to ordering goods that are shipped directly to your door, the internet has plenty of Beneficial uses to every human today. However, not every human use of the internet for the same reasons. While some may be play internet games there are others who use the Internet to gain revenge or an upper hand on others. A group called Anonymous uses the internet to seek social justice from those who have escaped the judicial system. They are a group of hacktivists who are loosely connected to each other. They have no known leader, instead they work off a principle of seeking justice individually. This group denial of service attacks on corporate religious and government related websites to expose corruption and injustice in the world. Little loose group of hacktivists was created around 2003 via 4chan, image based sharing website, where members do not have accounts were labeled “Anonymous”. Today Anonymous is symbolized by the Guy Fawkes mask. Guy Fawkes was a terrorist that tried to blow up the British Parliament on the 5th of November, which the movie ‘V for Vendetta’ was based off. Anonymous was first brought to the public's attention when they started to attack the Church of Scientology using pranks and hacks to mess with the church. Then was Later brought up to the public's attention when it exposed PayPal, MasterCard and visa for having impure intentions in its leadership. Even more recently than that, Anonymous provided more than 10,000 Twitter, Facebook and Instagram handles and emails associated with Islamic state of Iraq (ISIS) To help the Western world's war on terror. Anonymous continues to fight against crimes that escape the law, like child pornography, drug and sex trade and crooked businesses offshore tax evasion schemes. Anonymous can use the Internet to spread their ideas everybody with Internet access in the world. This makes Anonymous one of the most powerful, yet secretive organizations in the world today. Any user can claim being a part of Anonymous, however, if that user goes against the goals of Anonymous, and uses their hacktivism for bad, they will, in turn, become a target of Anonymous. This is an effective way for the group to maintain a positive reputation while still being able to be effective working in the outskirts of the law. With everybody's access to the internet in today’s world, Anonymous can connect to people all over the world and work on world problems that people do not want to talk about or address in a formal manner. This anonymity gives the individual user full power to do what is right or what is needed to tear down the evil they are sitting to destroy. The internet is used by many users for many reasons, such as social media, keeping in contact with friends, enjoying memes or pictures of cats, or taking down corrupt organizations. Anonymous focuses on keeping the internet free and the world a better place in many people's eyes. Before the internet, people were communicating in many ways. The deaf have sign language, the blind have braille, people used Morse code to send messages to others who were far away, and the Native Americans used their power of storytelling to communicate cultural norms and ideas to others in their tribe. The Apache Indians are tribe of Native American Indians who normally lives in the southwestern United States.
These people had to learn how to live and survive off the land they were given. The southwestern United States isn't exactly the easiest place to survive. This land mainly consists of towering mountains, deep canyons, hot deserts and the barren Great Plains. This type of land made the Apache people more hunter gatherers rather than farmers. Because of this, the Apache people traveled all over the place, looking for resources. In their travels, they decided it would be easiest if they could refer to a location and have everybody understand where that was. So, the Apache people come up with idea of place names. This means they would give a specific place a name, normally a first impression or unable to historical significance to their ancestors. By using these place names, they could revolutionize their language and way of life. These names also gave us a better understanding into the Apache culture. In fact, these place names are some of the only historical references we have of the Apache people. Most of their communication was verbal, meaning stores were pass from word of mouth, not by paper or any other physical documentation. The first real documentation that came from the Apache people, was the documentation from the European explorers the first found them. With this being the case, much of the Apache culture is lost to time with only small fragments of names …show more content…
left remaining. Thankfully we have these names, as they give a very good understanding of the culture and the people of the Apache Indian tribe. The form of media that the Apache place names game was a way to begin storytelling I'm continuing of lessons to younger generations of the Apache people. A simple name can give warning or explain a long history of the area that someone was in. By using these names originally, the Apache people could continue their traditions and way of life for generations to come. Both Anonymous and the Apache people communicated with each other to better on their own societies and ways of life. In terms of Anonymous, the media shaped who they were bye the way they presented the news articles about Anonymous. According to some news stations, Anonymous is a good group of people doing what was necessary to achieve a goal that was on a much larger picture. According to some other news stations, they are being reported as a sort of Internet terrorist organization. The actions of Anonymous have affected the social world of every internet user in multiple ways. To start out with, internet security has become more as a big deal, especially to bigger companies and more internet security protocols have been put in place. Anonymous also socially impacted users of the Internet when they took down websites like PayPal, Visa and MasterCard to seek revenge and exposed those companies. This made it so that many people could not use their credit cards to purchase anything, especially purchasing things online, which many people solely rely on. In terms of the Apache People, they had their own form of media. This media was much different. It was word of mouth related media. They had no feasible way to broadcast their stories all around, so they relied on the art of storytelling. To properly tell a story, you must have names for the places you're describing. These place names shaped the social world the Apache people by finally having a way to show their respect for the land their ancestors once walked on. the name themselves even tell remarkable stories of the locations past. This made the users of place names respect the land and honor the heritage related to the land. Any recorded history could be a form of cultural media.
The first account of recorded history is from 1754 BC in ancient Mesopotamia according to Prince Dyneley’s "Review: The Code of Hammurabi" showing that humans have used media for thousands of years. Whether the media is widely broadcast, like the type that Anonymous uses, or spread via word of mouth and eventually recorded, like the Apache Indians, it is still used to accomplish a cultural need. In the case of Anonymous, the media is used to personify the group and to spread its message. The media can show the world that Anonymous is a force to recon with. When Anonymous announced its slogan, “We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.” (yalelawtech.org), the world eye turned to them to see what they would do. In doing so, that gave Anonymous the power and attention it needed to bring social injustices to light with their cyber-attack and hacktivism. The form of media that the Apache Indians used was much different than the form Anonymous uses. The Apache Indians used the media to teach their children and to recognize the significance of a place. By giving a place a name, it personified the place, making the other Apache Indians respect its history instead of thinking of it as just land. The land was then used as a place of reference and a place of learning for future generations. The Apache Indians would be able to say the name of a place and the tribe would already know the
history of the location and its exact location. This let the elders teach the braves and other young people of the tribe the history associated with the land they lived on and around. With all these different forms of media, one could be overwhelmed trying to grasp a firm understanding of it all. However, if you remember the base of all media, to inform or shape a culture, it becomes remarkable simple to understand all different forms of media.
