As the reader reads they will see that the author talks about people not wanting to face reality. Also teens speaking out on how they feel about their situation and how the education value from one race to another is extremely different. In the text the author lets the reader know that most people are not open to talk about segregation and some just do not want to. "…
Then the student gives the route he takes to get from the college to his apartment and where he sits down to write his assignment. He studies the difficulty of writing something that is “true” or would be judged as true by an apparently white instructor or what is even true for him, a twenty-two year old black man. But then he concludes that he is what he feels, sees, and hears, and he says he hears Harlem.…
Black women have qualified as being brash women, cheap, and ghetto. The significance of being white in America means you are pure, guiltlessness, beautiful, and more privileges. Case in point, Trayvon Martin case reminds me a later form of the Emmett Till case. Trayvon and Emmett were both slaughtered in the south. The two murdered as a young kid. Martin and Till death were across the nation news. Relationships between the boys passing in respect to the South and its past and also who draws the limits that division us as an overall population. Emmet Till over his limits shrieking at a young white lady. Trayvon Martin crosses his limits passing a new neighborhood. Trayvon killed for being categorized as a thug for wearing a hoodie. Also, the principle of design for this artwork is contrast because light and dark values. The light helps us to characterize spatial connections. Specialists occupied with controlling light. Typical and manufactured light create different impacts on the encompassing environment altogether. These distinctions thus influence the way we see our…
The next article, “Black Men and Public Space.”, is about a man, Brent Staples, coming home and following behind a white woman. He describes how scared the woman gets when she notices the man behind her and goes into great detail how race, gender, and class play a big role in society and government. Mr. Staples also gives a strong ethical statement. “As a softly who is scarcely able to take a knife to a raw chicken-let alone hold one to a person’s throat-I was surprised, embarrassed, and dismayed all at once.” The quote before states, “… it was in the echo of that terrified woman’s footfalls that I first began to know the unwieldy inheritance I’d come into-the ability to alter public space in ugly ways. It was clear that she thought herself the quarry of a mugger, a rapist, or worse. Suffering a bout of insomnia, however, I was stalking sleep, not defenseless wayfarers.” This quote and Brent Staples as well are trying to say that not all Negroes are rapist, let alone muggers, and that they can actually be treated as actual humans. Brent Staples also has a very strong thesis. This thesis states, “My first victim was a woman-white, well…
In summation to this reflection upon this movie/ documentary and article we should all as teachers try to strive to help our students look at each other equally and treat them with the same respect, and by providing this lesson of no discrimination to our students. This will hopefully inspire a future were anyone regardless of what their skin color or their ethnicity can feel powerful and just as important as the people that surround…
3. Does this work make a political observation about African American culture? Does it perpetuate damaging stereotypes and myths about African Americans or does it deflate these myths and stereotypes?…
In the poem, “Theme for English B”, Langston Hughes demonstrates how the speaker feels about this English B paper assignment. He puts you in his conscious and has you go through his thoughts to give you a sense of what he is feeling like in this classroom being the only colored student in a class full of white students. The speaker is told to write a paper about himself. When that paper gets assigned, he is stumped. He took in consideration that he is the only colored student in his entire class. For him that was very shocking, coming from towns that had a colored community. The racial tension made coming to school a challenge. When he starts to brainstorm ideas, he realizes that he is like the other students around him after all. For example, he brainstorms how both him and the other students would be ecstatic to share about their new record they got. Being a new student at a new school can be terrifying. The speaker of this essay was at first, but then he came to realize the things that made everyone in that classroom similar. He started connecting with those around him, realizing that he was just like everyone else. All any new student wants coming into a new school is to fit in, and he found his way of doing just…
“Just Walk On By,” by Brent Staples describes his life as an African American that is criticized and judged by the appearance the he reflects. He talks about the many different times in his life he experiences these act of racial profiling, and what he does to resolve these acts of discrimination. Through his passive calm tone he displays throughout his essay, he comes up with ways in which he changes him self in order for society to accept him. However, this is just one of many life stories that people go threw and how they are affected by these unfair acts. We can still see this in today's society, all around us, some of us do this naturally with out putting thought in what we are rely doing. My dad had a friend at work in the same situation which was judged and made fun of because of the ethnicity he was from. I believe he wrote this essay to give us an idea of how the human race see people through the their eyes and do not comprehend that we can not infer something against someone just because he is this race or that race.…
Following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. a teacher in Riceville Iowa, Jane Elliot wanted to show her students what it means to discriminate against someone. They had just named Martin Luther King Jr. as their “Hero of the month” and no one could understand what would compel someone to assassinate someone so good. She wanted to let her students understand what it’s like to be discriminated against and what it was like to discriminate against people, letting the students experience both sides of these situations. Truly showing the evils that exist in everyone.…
The author was very successful in proving her point about the racism going on in the world. She first proved a point by telling her story because she is admitting that racism is something, and how she knows that it is. Her purpose was to inform people that racism is something and if someone that is young with a very racist family can overlook those things her family did, then she knows that people now can start to overlook t what happened in the…
This can lead back to the Thesis because this shows Racism which we still have in America today and the stereotypical Black…
It is time to reflect and respond to Black Boy by Richard Wright, by writing a notebook entry.…
He makes the audience sympathize with the African American teacher when she says “I have been called the N word too many times to count.” It was previously mentioned that the author spoke from many different perspectives so he can get an emotional response from more than one type of group. He brings up the “Black Lives Matter” controversy which tends to bring out some sort of emotion in the majority of Americans. Either people are completely supportive of the phrase or people believe that it should be “All Lives Matter.” There are few people truly do not care so this creates an emotion response. The final emotional appeal is when a student says “I don’t want to debate. I want to talk about my pain.” The two most frequent reactions to this is either complete sympathy and maybe even pity or it could be the complete opposite. Some people saw this quote and was off put by the immaturity it displayed. Even though these topics are controversial and there are a wide view of opinions, it still creates some type of emotion among those who keep up with today’s political…
In the article she talks about her kindergarten students and how one student told her that her mother was giving her pills to turn her skin white (Segura-Mora). The moment she shared with this student resulted in a teachable moment that benefited the students all together, but it was a sad moment to have to experience with children of such a young age. Segura- Mora begins to explain that as teachers we are “cultural workers” and “If teachers don’t question the culture and values being promoted in the classroom, they socialize their students to accept the uneven power relations of our society along lines of race, gender, and ability. Yet teachers can-and should- challenge the values of white privilege and instead promote values of self-love” (Segura-Mora,). I fully support and agree with Segura-Mora’s claim and as an educator I hope to do exactly that.…
Richard (a.k.a Slice) looked on the news after taking a hot shower in the morning and he saw that riots and protests were happening all over the country. The reason behind these riots, and protests is police brutality towards the african-american community. Even though people don’t think so there is still a lot of racial discrimination going on in today’s society, where black people are being killed for no reason. So Slice got dressed and headed to school where this topic of police brutality had been on his mind all day. For some reason, when his teacher Ms.VanZegeren said the class needed to write an essay on problems in today’s society, it was a perfect chance for him to express how he felt about police brutality.…
