Who writes history?
The essay written by Lyra D Monteiro basically states that although the play Hamilton is a brilliant play cast by phenomenal black and Latino actors, there is really no mention of slavery in the play. It essay speaks about how the play was made to mirror today’s “Obama America” as opposed to the America it was when the founding fathers lived. It made the play more relatable to today youth but failed to mention that the black actors probably had ancestors that were the slaves in that era. It is also fitting that a few of the actors are Puerto Rican and that means the play paid homage to the Caribbean roots of the main character but they Puerto Ricans are American citizens not immigrants. Literally there has been in recent years a reprisal of people telling the history of the United States as the “Founders Chic” genre. …show more content…
She does have some concern about the play thought and agrees with Lyra Monteiro, her essay and also the article by Ishmael Reed. Annette cannot understand how the play has received nearly zero criticism for the portrayal of our founding fathers and the erasure of black people. She also wonder how that can be in a society where for over a decade our historians and society have been fighting about the portrayal of our founding fathers and how we don’t include African American people in our history eight along with them. She says casting black people in the roles buffers the play from much criticism but in a way also harms the play by basically saying its ok that we enslaved people and we are just going to gloss over this
