Paula Borges Cambr1A 12 Karen Ferguson Essay Title “Using the case study provided at the end of the module Identify and explain the client’s issues and device a course of treatment for him, taking into account any ethical issue”.
Introduction
In this paper I aimed to identify Mr X issues as indicated by the given case study, and devising a course of treatment plan with boundaries of ethical concerns for him accordingly, and whether I have the experience to treat him or should refer him to a more experienced therapist. In this essay I will identify key information which may lead me to believe that Mr X’s issues are and also try to identify gaps in the case study details provided.
Identification of client’s Issues
Mr X of the given case study is a middle aged man working for an organization for 18 years. Still he is not confident enough to apply for the post of manager lying vacant in his company. He fears that he would ruin everything if he fails as a manager. Even though he is competent enough for the post as he is experienced and had worked for this post as a …show more content…
temporary replacement, still he fears that he could face failure. Usually individuals with low level of confidence don’t have faith on their abilities.
That is not the case for Mr X as he strongly believes that he can do the job but is being held back and is not in control.
What actually prevents him from applying for the job and many other activities are his assumptions regarding judgments of others individuals about him. He has assumed that others consider him boring person. It is also possible that Mr X has experienced a bereavement; there is no mention of a Father. He has assumed that is mother would react negatively if he modifies is schedule of visiting her, it may be that Mr X was looking after his mother but maybe due to her age or illness, or even work commitments he could no longer take care of her, and that has trigger feeling of guilt. He also has assumed that his colleagues won’t go with him if he suggests going for a drink some other day. He has assumed that is girlfriend would reject his proposal as he has nothing impressive to enough to offer her. Mostly his decisions are based on how others evaluate him. He is extremely conscious about opinion and response of others towards him. This is reflected on the fact that he is interested in working on the post of a manager because he thinks that his mother would consider him more successful and treat him with more respect. All this fears and self-made assumptions would not have prevented him in doing what he wishes to do if he would have communicated his fears or queries with the relevant individuals.
Open communication and direct discussions sort out any problems. Therefore, Mr X should have clearly discussed all this issues with the individuals involved or any other friend who might have guided him, instead of making assumptions. The fact that he does not communicate with others also reflects his low level of confidence leading to poor communication skills. Self-confidence is the mind-set which is developed by experiences. When an individual achieves success in one task, he/she tends to expect to achieve success in other tasks as well and this expectation leads to the sense of self confidence. In context of the given case study, Mr X could have tried facing fears starting from easier tasks such asking his colleagues to go for a drink during weekdays. Positive response of others in one or more situations might have helped him gaining confidence for bigger tasks such applying for the manager’s post and proposing to his girlfriend (Assen, 2008). Low self-esteem is a major problem for many people and has many causes that will interfere with a person’s life to varying degrees. Because low self-esteem not suddenly occur as a symptom at the age 21 or 34 or 56. It is often not met head on (Hadley and Staudacher ).
Self–esteem is how you think and feel about yourself; this may be positive, negative or move between the two points. This usually dictates how you live your life and the decisions you make – and how you view others too.
The more positive feelings you have about yourself, the higher your self-esteem is; the more negative feelings you have the lower your self-esteem is. Our materialist world, where people continually compare themselves with those around them, highlights our insecurities and often leads us to feel negative about ourselves and the way we live. We lose sight of the value of our own individuality and then feel inadequate and unsatisfied. It can become an enduring personality trait. . The trigger for a drop in self-esteem needs to be revealed and overcome; combined with an absence of medical history which may reveal a contraindication, I would discuss this case with my tutor. Equally, without knowledge of Mr X’s relationship history, it may be that he has a tendency to form relationships with people who show an interest in him but are not right for him and these relationships breakdown.
I would also suspect that there is an underlying issue, but this cannot be treated successfully until Mr X is ready to deal with the issue. “I know but just can’t seem to change the way I approach it and the actions I take” (Chrysalis pag9). That suggests that he may be receptive to identify and give consent to work as in case of lack of self-esteem meaning, hypnoses which is of value must be coordinated with counselling, I would also discussed with my tutor as ethically, and also refer him to a qualified counsellor for support. Working to improve your self-esteem takes time and effort. It requires courage and honesty to confront the things in yourself you don’t like but long-term it is a worthwhile task which should help you to feel better
Assuming that it was ok to proceed I propose the following treatment plan for Mr X for the present issue, I would recommend A positive feeling will arise from an appreciation of his own abilities Approximately 5 sessions are anticipated unless further issues arise and as discussed upon enquiry, of cost £.
Recommended therapy for client’s treatment
Considering the scenario of the given case study, Hypnotherapy is the most suitable therapy to treat Mr X since it is a powerful tool for building and boosting self-confidence in a short time. In fact, roots of confidence exist in the unconscious mind where our emotions reside. Since the issue is linked with subconscious level mind, therefore unconscious mind must be communicated in order to bring changes in feelings and associated behaviours and both hypnoses as well as neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is the means of communicating and/ or influencing the unconscious mind. Given below are the sessions recommended for the treatment of Mr X. (Assen, 2008). First session: It is clinically and ethical good to discuss the hypnotherapy with the client before initiating the therapy (Heather, 2001). And also information gathering exercise on the client; this of course added to as therapeutic sessions continue (Initial Consultation Form). Therefore, during the first session various therapeutic strategies that that would be employed in the subsequent sessions, approaches for achieving the optimum outcomes, pragmatic expectations and widespread misunderstandings related to hypnoses would be discussed. Mr X would be briefed about how does a patient differs from a client and what makes an individual to have or lack of confidence. In addition to this, he would be given briefing about minor modifications in perceptions, behaviours and ways of talking to one’s self influence the self-confidence of an individual ( Assen, 2008). Second session: This session comprises of the first induction of hypnoses employing gentle techniques to guide the client into a peaceful, deep state of relaxation, I will have written a personal screed for Mr X he’s modality is visual, using imaginary to achieve relaxation, to be able to create an internal situation for him, therefore the more safe and comfortable he feels the more open he’s subconscious mind is and more receptive and open to the suggestions. In order to reduce anxiety and develop positive as well as pragmatic expectations of the self, individuals of the and the world, post hypnotic suggestions are given to the unconscious ( Brook, and Schmidt, 2008). A positive feeling will arise from an appreciation of his own abilities.
Third session: NLP procedure would be employed during this session in order to get rid of low self-esteem. Mr X is briefed how to achieve the feelings of confidence and tranquillity while interacting with others. An NLP Anchor would also be used allowing the stimulation of tranquillity during subsequent stages whenever required. Set goals and knowing when they are achieved, visualizing achieving your goal is the key as imagination wins over will. I will use induction to achieve positive thinking, the mind will be able to accept an idea and action will follow. NLP offers strategies for effective inward and outward communication, using modalities, life content and thinking strategies of self and others .
Fourth session: This session makes use of Erickson Hypnotic Metaphors for building confidence. A metaphor would be used to develop and strengthen the hypnotic state of Mr X. the metaphor would direct the unconscious mind in order to instil sense of confidence and tranquillity. Moreover, NLP procedures would be strengthened. NLP offers strategies for effective inward and outward communication, using modalities, life content and thinking strategies of self and others .
Fifth session: I would use NLP visualizations; the unconscious mind is trained to get rid of sense of anxiety and troubling thoughts leading to a positive influence on the perceptions and emotions of Mr X. Moreover helping Mr X would be showed for self-hypnoses without taking help from recordings since recording equipment are not always available. .Hence Mr X would be trained to deliver himself the self-post hypnotic suggestions and create the state of hypnoses in order to generate a deep sense of tranquillity and confidence whenever needed (Brook, and Schmidt, 2008).
Conclusion
One of the most efficient means of building and increasing self-esteem and self-confidence leading to a drastic and positive change in one’s life is confidence hypnotherapy.
Only a few sessions of hypnotherapy can help the individual in achieving an improved sense of self with enhanced self-confidence and sense of being composed, self-assured and successful. following a visual PMR to achieve relaxation, suggestions using visual sub modalities, metaphor usage and anchoring aim to lead Mr X into an empowering mindset in which will hopefully with an optimistic state of mind, Mr X can overcome his lack of
self-esteem.
