Summary Of I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings By Maya Angeluo

In section five of Maya Angeluo’s short story “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” she writes about her first encounter and resistance taking action on who she calls “powhitetrash.” Although her grandmother owned the land these whitefolks lived on, their young girls would treat her and her uncle with the same disrespect as any other white person would which feeds anger inside her since her grandmother told her,“The less you say to whitefolks the better.” Angeluo describes her second encounter with these girls as the most painful and confusing she has had with her grandmother when they begin to mimic her grandmother. As the girls walk away from the shop, Angeluo what furious and could not understand why her grandmother did not go into the shop
like she begged her to, but as she saw her grandmother smile she realized though unsure what the contest was that they won.
