Summary Of If You Go Black Friday Shopping On Thanksgiving
Holiday shopping is a time of cheer and fun, but is it the right thing to do on Thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is a holiday for being grateful and cherishing your family and friends. But is this holiday being corrupted by the draw of Black Friday and the need to buy? In Mark Walsh’s article “If You Go Black Friday Shopping on Thanksgiving, You’re Part of the Problem”, he addresses this stating that Americans have corrupted the true meaning of Thanksgiving by letting a consumer-driven mentality control this age-old holiday weekend. Our need for stuff in growing and taking its toll on Thanksgiving while our pocketbooks are dwindling as a result of advertisements and popular thought. …show more content…
We never thought that we ever even needed something until we see that new cool thing on tv. Doing things your self has become a thing of the past, especially now that you can just buy something to do it for you. Having it radically discounted makes you want it even more. Businesses just want your money, so they encourage purchasing items saying that you can do payments, but this also means that you have to pay interest and in turn end up sending more money that if you had waited and saved your money. Advertising a big sale on Thanksgiving works this way too, and now they have conditioned you to want their items and you have to get there before everybody else takes them. Thanksgiving is no longer time for enjoying family and friends but instead seeing if that one thing is half off at that one store. As Walsh stated in his fifth paragraph of his article when referring to our economic system “Don’t create, or produce, or discover – just buy. Never save, never invest, never cut back – just

The entire idea of Thanksgiving is essentially molded around the idea of crops. Thanksgiving is thought to be, historically, a time where the Pilgrims and Indians came together to give thanks for the great harvest. In reality, The Native Americans celebrated the gifts of harvest as often as possible and the Pilgrims and Natives didn’t come together celebrating crops, but instead crops such as corn, and land in general was stolen from the Native Americans.…

For decades now Thanksgiving dinner with friends and family would consist of eating turkey, giving thanks, and spending time with those who are near and dear to you. However with the local economy and global conglomerates are becoming greedier with wanting more profits from this holiday. As a result “Grey Thursday” emerged. Companies are now trying to entice more people to partake in this tradition. Deals now start at 8 p.m. Thursday. This takes away from the time we should be giving thanks and enjoying one another’s company. The companies see it as a way to attract customers and produce the most income for the opening…

Thanksgiving has been viewed as a day of gratitude, spending time with family, and eating lots and lots of turkey. However, recently, Americans have seen Thanksgiving night as preparation for the next day which held many irrefutable offers in all stores. Instead of giving thanks for all the blessings they have, families are going over their strategies of how they are going to take advantage of the next day. Some argue that we’ve lost meaning of Thanksgiving as a nation. I agree with this statement because Black Friday has negatively impacted the masses so much that in order to prevent any mishaps from occurring the government might have to take a stand.…

Thanksgiving represents what it's like to be an American because on that day my family does something that only happens once a year. My family gathers around the dinner table and we all pray, thank god, talk, laugh, sing and for those of us who can’t sing, listen and we eat untill we pass out. Thanksgiving to me is a time where all is right, where family comes together and we refelct on the year, the good, the bad, we talk about our plans for the future and morn our losses of the year. Thanksgiving defines being American by making my family united, and that’s what being an American is, being…

Is Wal-Mart eroding our quality of life? Wal-Mart is taking away American jobs to decrease inflation and send the jobs overseas for less than minimum wage. It’s almost to the point where were shopping ourselves out of a job, you can’t shop if your unemployed. The low prices are convent for low income shoppers, but in my opinion we wouldn’t have low income shoppers if we tried to create more jobs here in the U.S. , so why not start with Wal-Mart first? “Wal-Mart projected sales have taken a hit twice in the last 10 quarters, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The last time was four quarters ago.” (Para 9.) With Wal-Mart’s sales not doing as well as they expected it has put Wal-Mart in a financial insecurity with worries of what their future sales could be like within our economy at this moment in time. “The early arrival of holiday goods is throwing off shoppers such as Troy Hollar, who regularly shops at Wal-Mart. The biggest question I have is, how can they put out this stuff two months early and they can’t even have regular stuff out? Hollar said.” I personally started to scratch my head when I recently went into a Wal-Mart and saw Christmas items out on display, along with Thanksgiving and Halloween. I’m thinking to myself, well the only one their missing now, is New Years and chuckle to myself. I don’t know what the strategy behind that ordering and display was, but…
