To every great paper written there is a great writer behind it. It is crucial that when writing any type of entry, it follows a certain criteria in order for there to be organization and clarity. Over the course of being in school for the majority of my life and having an English class basically every year; it’s became more clear to me how a paper should properly be written which is simply following the “5- Paragraph Rhetoric Model.” With this tool, my english/writing classes have been quite easy as this model allows me to organize my ideas, offer clear understanding to my audience and helps to minimize the time spent on trying to write a paper(as I know what goes where.) To begin with, organizing ones ideas when writing any type of paper makes the process a lot more smoother.…
Writers sometimes don’t seem to use all the resources that are available to them, and improve the skill of writing. “The best strategy for…
Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts” presents an argument to eliminate the understanding that writers create a masterpiece on their first drafts. The first draft is simply the first attempt that writers create to turn their thoughts into a final paper. Lamott tries to convince the “uninitiated” that everyone writes “shitty first drafts” and often times, positive outcomes come from those first attempts. One of the biggest obstacle in writing is the fear of creating terrible paper and many writers do not realize that this is actually the most important part to a good article. Lamott provided an effective rhetorical situation because of her persuasive appeals and structure.…
Lamott states “The right words and sentences just do not come pouring out like ticker tape most of the time for writers.” People have this unreasonable perspective that experienced writers do not have any problems when it comes to writing or that experienced writers can just sit down and write a perfect draft. However, experienced writers do go through the common motion, such as not knowing where to start or where to write more than one rough draft. Even though, experienced writers go through the common motion listed above, they do not allow those common motions to defeat them, besides that is what makes them professional writers.…
Our discussions run the gamut of topics from idea generation, to the gruelling first draft, to the process of editing, and finally, to publishing. All writers agree: writing is not a simple matter of sitting down in front of your computer and letting the words flow from your fingers as fast as they are created in your head. It just doesn't happen that way. Writing is a job. Writing is difficult.…
Chris Street wrote the article, “A Reluctant Writer’s Entry into a Community of Writers.” In Street’s introduction, he describes how he had a student named John who seemed angry, and didn’t seem to like writing. Finally, Street decided to change his ways of teaching his class. He began to let his students talk about what they cared about and what they knew, while he listened. This began to change his students writing.…
The majority of newspaper reporters and technical writers write unemotionally and detached from their readers by revealing nothing about themselves. Kurt Vonnegut’s “How to Write with Style” suggests seven principles on how writers should scrutinize and assess their own writing style in order to attain a personal voice in addition to the ideas in hand.…
During the writing process, one first has to get his or her thoughts on paper. This paper is known as the first draft. When writing a first draft, the writer tends to wonder whether it is more important to get all of his thoughts down than it is to write it well. There is more than enough time to revise your paper so that it is concise and well-structured. Since thoughts come and go, it is important to get them down on paper as quickly as possible. According to Anne Lamott, the author of Shitty First Drafts, the process of writing a first draft is not rapturous. She states that the “only way I can get anything written at all is to write really, really shitty first drafts.” She later states that what a character says is not overly important…
An adept writer usually depends on an existing way of writing which they learnt from others. The basic procedures of academic writing can be found in the templates which would help students to be familiar with conventional writing patterns and to make more sounded arguments. The most essential template in the book is the “they say, I say” template that teaches students to react to the arguments made by other people. The authors believed that a well-argued academic writing should include the opinion of others so that readers will know why there is a need to make an argument. The arguments that writers respond to do not have to be an eminent writer or the audience. From the template, we can learn that we do not need to be restricted to agreement and disagreement. We can agree and disagree at the same time. In addition, templates can help students to make more complicated moves…
After reading the article “The Composing Processes of Unskilled College Writers” by Sondra Perl I have been forced to understand how writers write. The writing process is a situation that is approached from various angles. In the writing process techniques and sequences from person to person are often diverse, but it is one of the ways one may be expressed. The goal of Perl study was to “see how unskilled writers write, can their writing process be analyzed in a systematic, replicable manner, and what does an increased understanding of their process suggest about nature of composing in general and the manner in which writing is taught in schools.” (191) With Perl performing this observation and collecting several amounts of data I decided to perform an observation on my writing by paying close attention to how I write. With analyzing I realized that my writing process have a very sequential pattern. I also have noticed that many acts of critical planning and editing are carried out through many of my writings and it has had a negative effect on the majority of my writing masterpieces. Subsequent to carefully critiquing my writing I have realized that all individuals have a different way they write.…
In his interview, Coates described writing as a linear process, in which one’s ideas begin as what he referred to as “sewage”. Only after several revisions, can one’s writing even begin to relate to the ideas they are trying to convey. Coates was then asked, “If one was able…
Writing can be written in a multitude of ways and can be perceived differently based on how it is proposed. For instance, in the essay How to Be an Artist According to Georgia O’Keeffe, it is shown that writers are built through the ways they are…
At first read of this article, I realize how important this essay is for understanding the complexities of how many students must negotiate when writing for the first time. Not only in an academic community in general – but also in the different departments of the academic community such as; English, Philosophy, Biology, Psychology, etc.. After my second read of this article, I realize that Bartholomae’s audience is for teachers, in that, Bartholomae raises awareness for a need among composition and writing scholars to be very specific in the demands they make on students. However, even though many students are very much aware of the demands of the academic community, many are still lacking the power to live up to the expectation and engage,…
Writing, something that has never befriended me, will always be an obstacle in my life. For me, it’s difficult to just sit down at a table and write something interesting and creative. I try to do so every time I am assigned a essay, and sometimes it turns out to be successful, but most of the time it is unsuccessful. Every time I am given a written assignment, I go through the same routine: I sit at the table and stare at my computer with my fingers on the keyboard. I have noticed that I come up with a lot of ideas, but I focus mainly on how to structure them while writing. In three articles written by Anna Lomott, Marie Foley and Donald M. Murray, they all discuss different strategies on how to draft, structure and revise an essay. They all have taught me a better way on how to make my writing strategy more successful in college than it was before.…
Writing varies from a text message to a novel. Writers often have a difficult task in creating a piece of work that truly identifies the meaning of good writing. Every good writer usually starts with the basics such as genre, audience, rhetorical situation, and reflection of the piece. Throughout this semester, we have gone through all of these key terms in great detail with each new assignment that has come our way. In doing this, not only as students but also as writers, we have come to create our own theory of writing. Every writer has a different theory of writing though most are very similar. Now, at this point in the semester after doing countless journals, in-class exercises, and final assignments, I think I have figured out my own theory of writing.…
