Summary Of John Freyer's Diverse Sneakers
While John Freyer’s objective was to eliminate as many of his belongings as possible, comparing his own description of his Converse sneakers to a current Ebay seller who is offering a similar style of product, John not only creates a personal connection with the commodity but with the buyer as well. By just taking a brief glance at the sneakers, people wouldn’t believe of it being too exclusive of an item, until John concisely discusses a few substantial factual and personal statements. Although he was not too detailed on the physicality of the shoes, John was quite specific on his opinion on American corporations’ mistake of moving all hard working labor to their Chinese factories. Freyer’s classification of his formerly owned Converse shoes would be considered a combination of both subjective and objective description. Because he has mentioned his personal views on how unethical it is to eliminate hard working North American employees and hire Chinese workers for inexpensive company costs, this automatically makes a personal and dual connection …show more content…
Though capturing visuals of an object may enhance any project, when including a personal belief or background story towards the main item, it helps the buyer and the seller create a personal connection towards the sneakers. There was this mutual connection when he would state his opinion on how capitalism was is being managed by big American corporations. Just by seeing that statement, it instantly created a bond between John and me. When he had stated that those sneakers were one of the last American crafted Converse, the need to purchase them increased because of the way he scripted its authenticity. Although it may seem accessible to judge an object by viewing photographs, skimming through a detailed definition of the article doubtlessly heightens the influence of the

    Damien Cave Summary

The article “On Sale at Old Navy: Cool Clothes for Identical Zombies!” written by Damien Cave explains how as a society we are swayed by the flash of big corporations and in turn are loosing what real culture we have left. Damien Cave starts the article off with a scenario showing a man named “Thomas Frank”. As Frank walks by a heavily decorated Old Navy he shows his disgust saying ”Oh God, this is disgusting”. Thomas Frank is a pioneering social critic, writing articles on how businesses adopted “cool anti-corporate culture”. As the article progresses we find that these businesses offer nothing more than poor quality merchandise at a low price, and the consumer is lured in by the promise of quality for less. Stores such as Old Navy and Ikea use marketing tricks to keep it's customer coming back for more. Ikea sets it's store up like a maze where the exit is placed only at the registers, the room models persuade the consumer they need everything they see. Old Navy hands out extra large shopping bags as a gesture of good customer service but can influence over spending. Damien Cave brings these issues up so that we the reader are aware of such trickery used by certain chain businesses. Society is so accustomed to these marketing schemes we don't realize we are replicating each others homes but in different variations; we can all buy the same sofa and not notice. We are lead to believe that we can find happiness in our belongings but that is far from the truth. This merchandise is poor in quality and can cause us to spend more in the end on replacements and repairs. These companies are scamming the general public into believing they are getting a deal and in return we are getting cookie cutter home…

Stuart Hall, the author of “Encoding/Decoding”, explores the relationship between encoding and decoding messages, explaining how one component of media can be decoded in several ways. As individuals, we give meaning to the things surrounding us based on our own beliefs, values, and experiences, making room for numerous perspectives. Basketball idol, LeBron James and supermodel, Gisele Bundchen, were featured on the cover of Vogue Magazine, March 2008 issue. Following the release of the March issue, James was acknowledged for being just the third male ever to appear on Vogue’s cover, and the first African American. What would be considered a major accomplishment for anyone, especially a young athlete has now become a very controversial issue. The cover of the magazine has produced both positive and negative viewpoints. While some support James in his memorable accomplishment, others critique him for not being more careful with his image. How is it possible that the same image could have such opposite reactions? This derives from how individuals give meaning to the things around us because of our beliefs. When two people can be shown the same image and interpret it in to completely different ways, as seen in the controversy with LeBron James on the cover of Vogue magazine, it is apparent that their experience have influenced their way of decoding.…

After researching a clothes Iron on “All my life” and then researching a few more of the items on eBay I was very much surprised to see the difference in the descriptions of both items. In the All my life description of the item the seller made sure to use a subjective description. She gave details about the product and explained where the product had come from and how it had been made. At first I believed this to be a combination of both subjective and objective. She did try to explain why she didn’t want to buy the used Iron due to its origination but as I re read the article subjective jumped out at me. The article was very detailed and it did return back to her personal view of the product itself.…

We all remember high school. Whether it was one or four years ago that we graduated, we all have memories of our former high school in our minds. The sweaty locker rooms, the locker filled hallways, and our favorite teachers were all part of the experience. Among the fond, and not-so-fond memories we have, remains the imprint in our minds of the different aspects of life we saw every day. One of the many aspects of life we clearly saw was the differing styles and trends of individuals. The diversity of these various styles was extreme and revealed each individuals lifestyle.…

Kress and Van Leeuwen (1996) have provided a toolkit for visual analysis that Unsworth (2001) draws upon in his analysis of images. In this short essay I will use the meta-functional framework as adopted by Kress and Van Leeuwen and presented by Unsworth (representational/ideational, interactive/interpersonal and compositional/textual) to conduct a short analysis of the special Green Issue of Vanity Fair magazine cover from May 2006. In the analysis I will also include Barthes’ (1972) concepts of connotation and denotation.…

    Made in China

“Made in China” is one of the most common labels one encounters in a shopping mall in the United States and Europe. If you take your bag out and look up the labels of all your stuff, you will find in fact that at least one-half of your belongings are made in China or assembled in China. Nowadays, some people experience the conveniences that Chinese merchandise brings and complain about the poor quality of the product, when they are enjoying the lowest prices in the world. Many times when people hold high quality products, they subconsciously think the high quality products must come from Germany, Japan and America, yet even these products are actually made in China. People take ‘poor quality made in China’ for granted when they discriminate. Sometimes people are wondering why the prices of Chinese products are even less than the prices in Goodwill and thrift shops even anywhere in the world, and why Chinese products always imply poor quality.…

Pictures are deceiving. They are often misrepresented by editors in order to make them more appealing to the viewer. For example, take this Big Mac from McDonalds. Here, advertisers have used a false portrayal of the real Big Mac to manipulate it’s viewers to want to the buy their product. Similarly to advertises misleading us, so too does the media in their depiction of conveying real life issues and events through the use of language features.…

Economists say that value is subjective. But what do they mean by that? Why is this concept so significant? In the latter part of this study, I will explain and give an example about this concept by comparing a Forever21 dress and a Femme dress. Most people would value these dress differently, and would be willing to pay more for one than the other. Yet the dresses are identical in terms of the labor and resources required to produce them. So what accounts for the difference in value? As I explain, the key factor is consumer preference.…
